South of England Championship - 25-26 May 2014

While rain fell all around them, the Concord club took advantage of the microclimate that seems to exist around their Cold Norton track to make a great success of the third  annual South of England Championship. The first event in 2012 was rained off after just a couple of races, but this year's meeting enjoyed a repeat of last year's warm sunshine, for Sunday at least. Monday was mainly overcast, with a rain shower turning the hard, slick, polished track into a skating rink for the finals, but the serious rain didn't arrive until we were on the way home - and then didn't stop for four days. Helped by an influx of Kent racers after Invicta's meeting was rained off, Concord had one of their best turnouts, and attracted plenty of compliments for the much improved track, well laid out venue and friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Big grids of 1s and Juniors provided hectic action; there was terrifically close racing from the 7s and 8s, but the main trophy eventually went to this year's on-form Class 2 man, Dave Farrow.
