SEGTO Championship @ Rolling Thunder Show - 9 August 2014

For the second year running, the SEGTO Championship was decided on the tarmac of Arena Essex, after two well supported rounds on the chalk of Horndean and the dirt of Tongham. Despite dropping the concrete Standlake Arena this year, the SEGTO Championship remains one of the biggest challenges in UK oval racing, requiring drivers to master three completely different surfaces. With a strong turnout of SEGTO racers added to the usual RTS programme (the Outlaw Hot Rods and Pickups were dropped at short notice, but the Outlaws turned up anyway and mixed it with the SEGTO Super Saloons), the packed race schedule ran like clockwork. If only the M25 had been as well maintained as the Arena raceway, it would have been a perfect night for all. As it was, the SEGTO drivers had all planned to arrive ridiculously early, so the two hour queue for the Dartford Tunnel was just  an annoyance for them, although the RTS classes were missing a few regulars, while one or two only made it for their second heat or final. The chaos down the road was in marked contrast to the fast, close and clean racing that sent the SEGTO regulars home (or at least as far as Junction 31!) with smiles on their faces.
