BOOK NOW FOR THE NEC!

Christmas is coming - which means that the first big motorsport event of 2011, Autosport International at the NEC Birmingham, is also approaching fast, with only one free weekend between the New Year festivities and the show.

Thursday 13 and Friday 14 January are the "Trade Days". The Oval Racing section of the show, where NASA are represented, won't be open, but there'll be the chance, on Thursday at 2 pm and Friday at 12.30 pm, to see the NASA Live Action team with the mixed Class 3/7s and the Junior Mini racers each having a single five lap dash.

On Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 January the NASA stand will be open for visitors, with an exciting array of cars including the public launch of the "ultimate budget racer". Be near the NEC stage at 12 noon on Saturday to hear more about this "back to basics" club racing initiative.

The Class 3/7 boys (and girl) will appear in five daytime Live Action shows on Saturday and Sunday, but the highlight of the weekend should be the Oval Racing Spectacular at 6 pm on Saturday. The Class 3/7s and the Juniors race in two heats and a final, sharing the limelight with the top three Oval racing classes; BRISCA F1 and F2 Stock Cars and National Hot Rods. The second Oval Racing spectacular is at 4.45 pm on Sunday, but with less time available the Juniors aren't racing on Sunday.

JACK BY AN INCH

All of the "end of season special" events in 2010 have been superb, and the ninth annual Blyton Rallycross meeting for Autograss cars on November 14 was no exception. The meeting had caused some worry for the organisers when, with a week to go, there were only 32 entries, but that total doubled in the following week, then on the day 90 cars turned up to provide an excellent day's racing. 71 Autograss cars were joined by 11 Rallycross regulars, 3 Autocross cars, 3 NORA off-road buggies and two stadium racers.

The best supported class, for Stock Hatch, featured equal numbers of Grassers and Rallycrossers, with final honours going to former Autograss champion turned Rallycrosser, Ben Cree, although until both their cars hit trouble, the Essex team of Mike and John Sullivan looked set to show the Rallycross boys the way round their own track!

The second biggest class, comprising Classes 2, 4 and GT Rods provided an impressive win for multiple Class 2 champion Ian Harvey. Rich Lee headed a spectacular mix of Class 7, Class 5 and one Rallycross Supercar and Nev Armstrong held on to win a close fought Class 3/6. Class 1 honours went to Pete Collins, driving £50 worth of Citroen AX, after favourite Tom sanderson was knocked out in the heats.

In the open-wheel divisions, Richard Herdman held off Andy Hornshaw and Tim Corner in a fast and furious Class 8 battle, while Rick Finnerty returned from two years' layoff to top the Class 9/F600 field.

After 48 races had been run in just over 5 hours (4 heats and a final for everyone), the Superfinal closed the meeting at 2.30 pm; a spectacular finish saw Jack Farrow's Class 2 cross the line just an inch ahead of Rallycross man Martin Peters and Craig Lomax.

ELECTRIC END TO SEASON

A change of format for the annual Grassers’ outing at Northampton international Raceway meant all the action was crammed into one day, with virtually unlimited practice laps for the 78 entrants in the afternoon sunshine, before an evening of racing under the floodlights. As night closed in and it was time to turn on the lights, it appeared that the generator that powers Northampton’s superb new lighting system had been filled up with water instead of diesel and the Class 8s sat on the grid in the pitch dark for two hours while the system was drained and coaxed into life. The Autograss racers came to the rescue and the efforts of a number of drivers, notably Mark Hall and Lance Bowen, finally saw the track bathed in bright light. It had been worth the wait as some excellent racing followed for the rest of the night, finishing despite the delay at 9.15.

Fittingly Mark Hall took a well deserved final win in Class 8, the best supported class of the day, while Lance got himself involved in some slightly controversial antics in the Class 2 final! The few serious mishaps included both the Junior Specials present clobbering the wall at the start of their first heat, while Class 8 top qualifier Barry Ashmore broke his wrist in a clash at the start of the final.

Highlights included Mikee Habicht, one of two SEGTO drivers present, outpacing all the Class 5s in his 1450 Hot Rod Fiesta until he was taken out at the start of the reversed grid final, leading to an impressive comeback drive, while the father and son duel in Class 10 saw Terry Seagreaves just fending off Lee. Other hard luck stories included Russ Tillson’s car expiring while heading for Class 6 victory, and newcomer Alan Lea getting knocked out when looking set for the Class 4 win, while other class favourites to hit trouble in the finals were Scott Shell in Class 9, Paul Fackrell in Class 10 and Tom Hall in the Juniors. A Champion of Champions race closed the night, won by Rob Lancaster in his Class 4 AX.

The following day saw the very last grass meeting of the year, the traditional Nottingham Bonfire Meeting. 205 entries packed the Oxton pits before being treated to three rounds of short, sharp three-and-a-half lap heats on a chilly but sunny afternoon, with near perfect track conditions. There were no winners on the day as points were being accumulated towards the Winter Series trophies, decided over nine sets of heats at the three meetings. Top scorer overall in the series was Emily Crosby, who was the only driver to take an unbeaten nine heat wins.

SCUNNY'S SHALE SENSATION

The second annual meeting for Autograss cars on the shale at Scunthorpe Speedway proved a big hit with drivers, spectators and promoters alike. The meeting attracted a healthy total of 110 entries – 107 grassers plus two local GT Rods and stadium owner/speedway promoter Rob Godfrey, returning to his roots with a Hot Rod Mini. The entry comprised mainly local club racers, with a few longer distance travellers. After afternoon practice, a hectic evening saw 45 races completed in five and a half hours. The strongest field was a star studded Class 8 line up, which saw pile-ups and stoppages in all the heats before Phil Cooper won the final, having already taken a win in Class 9. The Class 7 battle between Mike Mackenzie, Brenden Guest and Tony Goodsir was the highlight for many spectators, while Rob Milbourn’s Subaru Turbo-powered Peugeot 206 (Class 6) was perhaps the star car of the day, but all the classes provided close and entertaining racing. For the second year running the Superfinal went to a Junior Special driver, Wes Green, while last year’s winner Sean Wright created his own record by racing in Juniors and Class 10 on the same day!

The next day saw the penultimate grass meeting of the year, at Scarborough’s Hunmanby Raceway. At the end of a long season only 34 cars turned up, but a dry and misty day provided good track conditions and everyone was rewarded with three heats, finals and opens, all completed before 3 pm. Initial race distances of eight laps were reduced later in the day to accommodate tired cars and drivers, but the longer races allowed some interesting battles to develop, particularly in the third set of heats, with handicap starts. Among the notable performances Kim Green had her first ever day’s racing, and her first race win! Aimee Pallass was the only survivor from a strong Class 7 field, and a full grid of Class 2s provided action all day until Tom Blyth finished off with the day’s only roll.

EASTERN OPEN FINAL

As with other regional series, support for the Eastern Open Challenge has been patchy through the season, with 251 drivers scoring points in the series but only 19 of them contesting all four rounds that were eventually held, after the Kent round was rained off. However an excellent entry of 177 arrived at ST NEOTS for the final round, with strong contingents from all five Eastern region clubs, plus several visitors from the East Midlands and a handful from further afield. A waterlogged track had to be pumped dry for the third time in three days before racing could start, but very soon the track was in excellent shape for some close fought battles through most of the classes, bringing the East Anglian season to an excellent close. The Eastern Open Champion of Champions race, held in gathering darkness, was won by Tony McKenna, compensation for losing both the East Anglian and St Neots Class 2 titles due to a last corner breakdown earlier in the day.

The only other weekend event was at YORKSHIRE DALES, who activated their reserve date for a well supported meeting. A waterlogged site forced the cancellation of the final Scottish meeting at Lochgelly, leaving Class 10 driver Mick Nairns to be crowned overall Scottish Champion.

NASA-SEGTO ROUND 2

Full grids, close racing and warm sunshine  made Tongham Motor Club's round of the NASA-SEGTO Challenge one of the most successful in the 11-year history of the event. SEGTO drivers took the honours in most classes, the exceptions being Allan Crowther in the Super Saloons and Trevor Smith (who along with Sean Collin was representing both NASA and SEGTO in different classes) in the Specials. Highlights included Dan Blackman's Mini coming from the back of a 16 car grid to win both of the Prod B/Mod C/Class 2 heats, before repeating the act to win the final on the last corner. Nicky D'Souza's immaculate Mini-Vauxhall beat a very strong 1450 Hot Rod field and Keith Blackman's Fiat 127 came out top in a 22-car Production A/Class 1 group. Adding variety to the meeting was a popular guest appearance by the BRISCA Heritage F1 Stock Cars.

The PURE SILK NORTHERN CHALLENGE had its final round at Scarborough on Sunday. NOTTINGHAM ran the second Winter Series meeting, attracting a big turnout (242 entries) including an appearance in Phil Cooper's Class 8 car by Ben Collins (recently unmasked as "The Stig") as the "Fifth Gear" TV programme filmed a feature to be included in their forthcoming Channel 5 series. Nottingham also featured the final of the BRITISH F600 CHAMPIONSHIP, with Bryn Hawkins winning and securing his second successive championship.  NORTH WALES rescheduled the rained-off Hilary Kent Memorial meeting for Sunday. Other meetings were successfully completed at STAR and EVESHAM.

NASA-SEGTO ROUND 1

A week spent pumping water off their flooded track paid dividends for Concord Autograss as they hosted the first leg of the 2010 NASA-SEGTO Challenge. A lovely sunny Sunday brought probably the biggest ever attendance to the Cold Norton track, with 90 NASA entries joined by 32 SEGTO visitors, despite a disappointing clash with the final SEGTO points meeting at Standlake Arena. The track inevitably developed a few dips and jumps after all last week’s rain, but a few well timed track levelling breaks kept everything under control; there were very few incidents and the only car to get upside down, Rob Britchford’s Stock Hatch, was back on the line for the rerun. The Stock Hatch final produced one of the most spectacular races of the season with the leaders racing four abreast until Jonny Meare snatched the lead in the last corner. The Junior final ended controversially, with Mark Sullivan taking the lead just before the reds came out for an incident involving Luke Saunters; the result was taken back a lap, giving Luke the win. SEGTO’s main success came with a clean sweep of the trophies in the combined Class 1/Production A, which needed three attempts. Sean Collin raced as both a NASA driver in class 9 and for SEGTO in his Super Saloon Nova, giving Class 7 winner Trevor Martin a very good run for his money before succumbing to a broken driveshaft. Also adding variety to the programme were a good grid of “Class 3B” Sierras, making their first appearance outside Kent.

The second leg of the NASA-SEGTO Challenge takes place this Sunday (17 October) at Tongham Motor Club’s Brick Kiln Farm track – on the A31 between Farnham and Alton. All NASA visitors will be very welcome; added attractions include the usual steam trains passing the track on the Watercress Line, and a guest appearance by the BRISCA Heritage Stock Cars ......

Elsewhere, PENNINE completed their Autumn Showdown series. Radford saved their major event, the WORCESTERSHIRE CHAMPIONSHIP for their end of season meeting. The Autograss season at SCUNTHORPE had its final event before the action switches to the Speedway shale and Rallycross circuit. LEEWOOD and YORK also both ran their final 2010 events. The Irish season finished with a non-championship meeting at WEST WATERFORD.

GP BEATS THE WEATHER

The worst weekend weather of the season (in the UK, at least) saw meeting after meeting cancelled. Among the victims of waterlogged tracks were the fourth round of the Eastern Open Challenge, due to be hosted by Invicta Kent, and NORTH WALES' Hilary Kent Memorial meeting, which should have featured the seventh round of the British F600 championship, but was washed out early on Sunday morning, as was Central Scotland's last meeting at Lochgelly, which will now be run on 24 October. Also rained-off were Melton, Severn Valley, Scarborough and Yorkshire Dales, leaving no events at all running on Sunday.

SOUTH SOMERSET's third annual Autograss Grand Prix, the only team event in Autograss, was supposed to be the last major two day event of the year. However, with a dire forecast for Sunday, South Somerset made the inspired decision to rush the meeting through and squeeze the full format into one day; super organisation at the Somerset Raceway provided practice, three heats, the "Wlldcard Opens", the Grand Prix finals and all the class finals during a non-stop session from 10 am to 5 pm!

This was followed by an excellent night's entertainment in the Oaktree clubhouse, with trophy presentations followed by Allan Tovey's unique charity auction. Although Sunday's racing was inevitably cancelled after the overnight rain, everyone had already had their money's worth.

EXPERIMENTAL ONES SHINE

The EAST ANGLIAN OPEN is one of the few traditional regional open events to have survived the changing nature of the Autograss calendar, and the 2010 event at Wyboston attracted a healthy turnout despite several clashing events. 172 drivers took part over the two days with separate full meetings on Saturday and Sunday. Qualifiers from both days went forward to the Champion of Champions events, won by Tony McKenna, Alice Bell and Nathan Saunders. The Experimental Class 1 cars had their own “National final” with five of the current eight licenced cars in action; Eric Canning’s “Bubble Micra” took the honours.

At NOTTINGHAM the first round of the Winter Series, with 184 entries, doubled up with the East Midland League’s annual Champion of Champions events in which top honours were taken by Dave Hampson and Stacey Davey.

STROUD’s Cash for Cash meeting at Javelin Park was similarly well supported. Two-day events featured in both Northern and Southern Ireland, at DOWN and CORK. YORK hosted round four of the Pure Silk Northern Challenge, while other meetings took place at North Shropshire, Leewood and Wessex.

INVICTA'S TRIUMPH

Invicta Kent Autograss Club had a lot to live up to when hosting the final round of the 2010 British Autograss Series, as their previous running of the BAS final, in 2007, was still being talked of as the most enjoyable of all BAS events. The fastest growing club in NASA excelled itself and eclipsed even their own previous event; a superbly prepared and presented venue, excellent facilities, fine weather and a warm welcome from the Invicta members, many of whom had never seen an event of this scale before, came together to produce a weekend's racing that could hardly be faulted. 448 drivers signed on to race, including 101 from the home club, and there were two local winners with Mitch Wells taking a memorable Junior win and Sue Whipps avoiding all the incidents to win Ladies' Class 6.

Once the twenty two class titles had been decided, Champion of Champions wins went to Antony Jackson and Alice Bell.

There were more club meetings than usual scheduled against the BAS; alternatives were  held by FOREST OF DEAN, WESSEX and LEICESTER.

WILDE THING

The Donegal-based Shropshireman John Wilde won the title of the Irish Fastest Person on Grass for the second time in three years at the climax of the WEST WATERFORD club's showpiece meeting at their Ballysaggart track, high in the Knockmealdown mountains. The trophy was presented by the West Waterford club President, J P Houlihan. The meeting also incorporated the final round of the ALL IRELAND AUTOGRASS SERIES in which John Shanahan, who on the day won Class 2, took his regular Class 7 car to the All ireland  Champion of Champions title.

Heavy overnight rain preceding the meeting promised very difficult conditions; yet within a few races on Saturday the track was in its usual perfect condition and the meeting featured fast and furious action throughout, with very few untoward incidents. In accordance with Irish tradition, the action them moved to the luxurious surroundings of the Park Hotel in Dungarvan, and Ireland's biggest race meeting was finally concluded at 4.30 on Monday morning!

The other major meeting on 11/12 September was the YORKSHIRE OPEN, run by the Yorkshire Dales club at Thornborough. SOUTH SOMERSET's meeting was changed to a two-day event. Sunday's fixtures also included the second of PENNINE's three "Autumn Showdown" meetings; the latest round of the British F600 Championship at STURTON & STOW, plus meetings at CONCORD, NORTH WALES, RADFORD and SPALDING.

CLARE'S CHAMPION AGAIN

The 27th running of the Ladies’ and Juniors’ National Championships, hosted by Scunthorpe & District Motorsports Club at Blyton Raceway was an outstanding success. With a slightly smaller entry than in recent years (there were 398 entries, of which 333 actually took part) the sun shone on a well prepared venue, the racing was close and competitive throughout, and a high standard of driving meant a corresponding reduction in the number of contentious marshalling decisions. The Scunthorpe team (responsible for the track and facilities) and NASA officials (responsible for controlling the racing) worked together so that the event ran like clockwork, resulting in early finishes on both days.

LADIES' & JUNIORS' RESULTS

There’ll be a full report of the event coming soon in Autograss Review, but here’s a quick summary:

JUNIORS – 84 of the 99 entrants raced through three heats, quarter finals and semi-finals. By the third attempt at the final, two of the main favourites, Shane Deegan and Conner Griffiths, had been eliminated and the youngest driver in the final, Zack Booth, already the North of England Champion and Fastest Junior on Grass, took his third major title after fending off Matt Stratton’s borrowed car.

JUNIOR SPECIALS – Jack Gibbons performed well all weekend and held off the pack to win the final, only to lose it on a technicality in the scrutineering tent, handing the title to Jack Rawlinson, who celebrated his 16th birthday in fine style.

CLASS 1 – Controversy arose not from on-track incidents but from an amazing decision to change the rules halfway through the event, introducing a semi-final stage after drivers believed they’d already qualified for the final. Bobbie Neale, Michelle Phillips and Hayley Empson all lost their final places as a result. Nicole O’Brien impressively led the final, but was taken out; the rerun saw Becky Shaw holding off Alice Bell to take her second title.

CLASS 2 – Sarah Trott’s run of Nationals success ended with a black flag in the final. Michelle Arnett led the race convincingly on three out of four attempts, but a brave pass for the lead saw Claudette Chater take the honours as Michelle avoided a collision but dropped to fourth.

CLASS 3 – Former Champion Julie Shaw was consistently quick all weekend and shone on the polished track surface in the final; Penny Smith’s challenge for the lead ended up in a spin and Jo Thompson closed in but couldn’t dislodge Julie.

CLASS 4 – Lisa Grasby’s Stiletto fended off the battling Minis of Sarah Levics and Vicky Appleton with Sarah, despite rolling in her last heat, taking a close second.

CLASS 5 – Five cars were in contention throughout a very close final, but in the end nobody could get round Laura Atyeo who completed her transition from FWD champion to RWD champion with a well controlled drive.

CLASS 6 – She only races occasionally, but Paula Rees-Williams looked the class of the field throughout the weekend, keeping clear of no end of incidents going on behind her and eventually holding off Katie Sunley for the win.

CLASS 7 – On a slick and dusty track four National Champions past and present battled for the lead; there seemed no way past Di Jones, but where overtaking looked impossible, Clare Horner found a way and came through from an initial sixth place to grab the lead on the last lap.

CLASS 8 – Having lost her Class 7 title, Michaela Bevans went out and, at the wheel of Luke Jenkins’ WL car, beat all the Class 8 regulars, pulling out a small lead as Lindsay Stephenson fought off Sandra Jones for second.

CLASS 9 – After her long Junior Specials career, Katie Lockwood has taken instantly to more power, racing both Class 8 and 9, and despite relatively little mileage to date in her Honda-powered 9, dominating the final as Bev Candy came home second.

CLASS 10 – A single 8-car grid avoided incident all weekend. A very slick track for the final meant that the only change of position came when Laura Morgan spun out of second, but Carrie Mills was safely in front to take her second title.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS – Having now been champion in four different classes, Clare Horner set another record, passing Lisa Grasby on the outside on the last lap to become the first driver to win the Champion of Champions from three different classes.

FASTEST COOPER ON GRASS

August Bank Holiday weekend was due to feature its traditional four multi-day events. The FASTEST MAN ON GRASS championships took place at Caenby Corner, Lincolnshire on Sunday and Monday, featuring its popular “finals for all” format before the top finishers in each class go on to the “knockout” stages. The BORDER COUNTIES’ AUTOGRASS FESTIVAL featured three separate days’ racing on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, plus over all three days the “Super Saloons/Specials Shootout”, based loosely on the Fastest Man format. WESSEX  staged separate days’ racing on Sunday and Monday, with the addition of Saturday afternoon "fun racing". INVICTA KENT however were forced to cancel their two day event with the track under water. The only single day event was at CENTRAL SCOTLAND on Sunday.

At the end of the 38th annual running of the Fastest Man on Grass, the oldest established championship in Autograss, Phil Cooper outran Russ Thompson to take the main title for the third time, while Brian “Shifty” Wright brought his Class 5 into remarkable third overall. Lindsay Stephenson outfumbled defending champion Clare Horner while lapping slower cars to become Fastest Lady on Grass. Zack Booth was possibly the youngest ever winner of the Fastest Junior on Grass title, chased by Junior Special leader Jack Bailey, bouncing back from a night in hospital after a heavy roll on Sunday. The Sturton & Stow Motorsport Club’s classic event at Caenby Corner Raceway was an outstanding success, recapturing much of the atmosphere of earlier years at the Lincolnshire Showground. Fast and close racing accompanied slick organisation, and the class finals were all completed in time for drivers to enjoy all the track time they wanted in the Lincolnshire Open handicap races. The meeting attracted 389 entries, with the usual mixture of top national level cars and club racers, from as far afield as Dorset and Scotland.

 SPENCER’s SHOOTOUT

We’re beginning to get complaints about the number of times Ian Spencer’s headlined our front page during his debut Class 8 season, but the Manchester driver again captured the limelight at the end of the three day Border Counties Autograss Festival. Ian loaned his new Rade car to Stock Car legend Rob Speak for the Sunday and Monday sessions and in the weekend’s climax, the Super Special Shootout, Rob came home an excellent second – beaten only by Ian Spencer, who’d repossessed his older car from John McBride! The other headline event, the Super Saloon Shootout, saw a brilliant win for young Class 7 newcomer Jake Roberts, chased home by Border Counties stalwart Gently Bentley and by Patrick Sheehy, one of the strong contingent of Irish visitors. The very full weekend’s racing featured 300 entries on the Saturday, swelling to over 430 on Sunday.

SCUNNY BAS AND FOREST FUN

August 22/23 saw the fourth round of the British Autograss Series, held at Scunthorpe’s Blyton Raceway. In mostly fine conditions, the racing was completed with brisk efficiency despite the usual quota of incidents, including major rolls in Class 6 for Alex Hay, Nathan Rees and Stuart Thompson. The turnout was somewhat reduced from the previous round’s record 781, but even so 602 signed-on drivers made for a very busy event.

There was a good choice of club meetings for non-BAS racers with events taking place at Leewood, Forest of Dean, Concord, Central Scotland and West Waterford, although Radford’s planned meeting was washed out. The Forest meeting at Westbury-on-Severn was also affected by overnight rain, with a sticky start, but as the track dried out the 107 competitors enjoyed an entertaining and incident-free day’s racing.

SCUNTHORPE          FOREST

Tuesday 17 August saw the second of the summer promotional events at Manchester’s Belle Vue stadium. Heavy rain through the afternoon was among the factors that reduced the turnout of Autograss cars, but as the evening’s racing began the sun came out and the shale quickly dried as the four Class 8s, one Class 5 and two Class 1s put on another good show for the large crowd. It appears that this summer’s Belle Vue events have already resulted in several new recruits to Autograss racing. There’ll be an opportunity for bigger fields of Autograss cars to sample the Belle Vue shale for an end of season outing on 26 October.

DASHES FOR CASH

The weekend after the Nationals saw money, rather than trophies, up for grabs at the two biggest events; Scarborough’s well established “Dash 4 Cash” meeting at Hunmanby and the South Wales League’s new “Fastest Person on Welsh Grass” at Pendine. Both attracted good entries; over 140 for South Wales and over 130 at Scarborough. The formats were very different; South Wales ran five heats leading up to the money finals, while Scarborough staged a very popular “fun day” on Saturday before running the “Dash 4 Cash” as a one day meeting on Sunday. Both had an international flavour with several irish visitors in Wales and a strong Scottish contingent at Scarborough.

Winners of the Champion of Champions for Men, Ladies’ and Juniors in South Wales were Matt Sawyer, Val Shanahan and Otis Williams. Top honours at Scarborough also went to a Class 2 driver, Frazer MacLeod, with the Ladies’ and Juniors’ prizes going to Nikki Shepherdson and Jimbob Johnson.

Elsewhere, CAMBRIDGE’s meeting saw the long awaited debut of the most radical new car of the year, Don Colquoun’s front-engined Class 8, while in contrast to the fast conditions at Stretham, Cambridge’s nearest neighbour SPALDING had to cancel after heavy rain on Saturday. PENNINE ran the first of their three “Autumn Showdown” meetings and attracted 106 entries from far and wide to their highly rated Darleymoor track. At NORTH SHROPSHIRE John Aldred won another action packed F600 final to increase his lead in the British Championship. SOLWAY were also in action on Sunday and Northern Ireland had its own two day meeting at DOWN.

SPENCER'S BELLE VUE

Two days after a rerun of his last heat cost him a place in the National Class 8 final, Ian Spencer was in his element at Manchester's Belle Vue stadium, putting on a show for the appreciative Tuesday night crowd in another successful promotional event for Autograss in the North West. A mixed field of ten Grassers enjoyed 32 laps of racing during the Startrax promoted "family fun evening", which also featured Bangers, Reliant Robins and UK Modified racing. There's a second chance to see the Grassers on the legendary shale, or to join in the action (late entries will be welcomed) this coming Tuesday, 17 August with the racing starting at 6.30 pm.

Our full and comprehensive Nationals report will appear in Autograss Review issue 183. For now, a quick run down on the finals that completed a spectacular, often dramatic and controversial weekend at Withington, and a few samples of the weekend action:

ROB CORBETT won the Champion of Champions title in his Class 4 Micra, finishing the race well clear of Tim Harber and John Gay.

Class by class in brief:

CLASS 1: A messy final, with two reruns; two black flags, one of which was ignored, bringing out the reds, early leader Rob Drake buried in the armco and the winner on the road excluded for engine irregularities, giving the official win to David Kay, in his first full season since returning to racing.

1st ARC45 David Kay 2nd PAC157 Tom Roberts 3rd SV21 Mark Davies 4th YD35 Rachael Davis.

CLASS 2: Also needed two reruns, but no doubt about the winner as Tim Harber took his fifth successive (and sixth altogether) title.

1st SV5 Tim Harber 2nd S2 Tony Hart-Jones 3rd C64 Lloyd Morgan 4th SR54 Lee Evason

CLASS 3: Again, two reruns, both after first corner incidents, but Martin Gould withstood extreme pressure to take his third title.

1st NS334 Martin Gould 2nd ARC27 Lee Almond 3rd SR22 John Shorter 4th Y180 Carl Allen

CLASS 4: Huw Jones had just taken the lead when the race was stopped due to defending champion Adam Jones being taken out. The rerun was a completely different race with Rob Corbett coming through to win.

1st PAC3 Rob Corbett 2nd E220 Darren Grasby 3rd TA32 Alun Jenkins 4th NS952 Mike Compton.

CLASS 5: Wayne Mathurin was unbeaten all weekend and took a dominant final win ahead of a close three way scrap for second. A clean race!

1st SN321 Wayne Mathurin 2nd C41E Antony Jackson 3rd P24EM Brian Wright 4th R420 Al Green

CLASS 6: One of the closest fought finals ever - countless lead changes among the top five drivers, who kept the fight clean with Andrew Smith winning his second title. Unfortunately many spectators missed this one due to a major dust storm!

1st N25 Andrew Smith 2nd ST12 Allan Weston 3rd MA183 Declan Browne 4th Y821 Chris Mullen

CLASS 7: Controversy as John Gay and Mark Griffiths came together leaving Donal O'Brien in the lead; the race was stopped and rerun without Griffiths. Another rerun later, John Gay came from behind to pip Rich Lee on the last lap.

1st A7 John Gay 2nd N70 Rich Lee 3rd BC59 Simon Bentley 4th SN145 Kraig Murley

CLASS 8: After top qualifier Simon Graeme and Antony Ross had a first corner incident Karl Bennett led the way, but a challenge from Colin Byrne let Geoff Berrisford take advantage, giving GB the unique distinction of being the only man to have been champion in all three Specials classes.

1st NS55 Geoff Berrisford 2nd CK3 Colin Byrne 3rd NW26 Karl Bennett 4th A13 Laurence Blaber.

CLASS 9: John Whitehouse dominated the weekend but didn't cross the line first in the final - a last corner pass by Phil Cooper earned Phil a green flag though, returning JW to the top spot and at last removing him from the list of "best drivers never to win the Nationals"

1st T7 John Whitehouse 2nd S2D James Candy 3rd ARC5 Phil Cooper 4th ARC7 Sean Power.

CLASS 10: Andy Patrick was controlling the race from the front when Phil Rogers' rear suspension broke, bringing out the red flags. Andy went out of the rerun with a puncture. Ryan Power led most of the way but a final three way shootout saw Terry Seagreaves take his second National title.

1s ARC3 Terry Seagreaves 2nd ARC8 Ryan Power 3rd SS6 Chris Ellis 4th NS160 Mark Lawrence.

JUNIOR CHAMPION HOULIHAN

On the pre-Nationals weekend the only two day event was in Ireland, when Cork Autograss staged a Junior Challenge as part of their event at Castletownkenneigh. Juniors in the UK had their own special event on Sunday, courtesy of MELTON club, where Radford's Juniors took the main trophies, William Barrett winning the Saloons and andrew Adams the Specials. Traditionally the biggest meeting of the pre-Nationals weekend is BREDON HILL's "King of the Hill" at Hilltop Raceway, Tirley, which attracted its usual good entry. Class 6 racer Micky Manning won the "King of the Hill" title, Jade Dyke took her Class 9 to victory in the "Queen of the Hill". NORTH WALES had a well supported meeting with 123 entries. Other events took place at STURTON & STOW, and YORKSHIRE DALES, where Scotland's Keith Matthews made a winning return to Class 9.

At CORK the title of Irish Fastest Junior on Grass was contested by the top three scorers from all three Junior classes, and was won by Citroen AX driver Jack Houlihan. The individual class finals were won by Steven White (Class 1 Mini), Stephen Sugrue (Class 1A Micra) and Diarmuid O' Brien (Junior Special). Although the Juniors took pride of place, there was plenty of good racing on the extended and now very fast track for the men's and ladies' classes, including possibly the best Class 2 final we'd ever seen, where Jimmy White and eventual winner Aiden O'Neill changed places throughout, including twice between the last corner and the flag!

SPENCER'S INVICTA TROPHY

The major event scheduled for 24/25 July, the WASA OPEN at Magor Raceway, was unfortunately cancelled after heavy rain; a big disappointment as this was to have been a revival of one of the classic Western Region Opens, with no clashing local meetings and a planned race format that offered drivers over double the amount of racing of a BAS round. Other events included two days at YORK where free entry Saturday saw plenty of drivers enjoying lots of open racing, followed by four heats and final on Sunday. Sunday saw the Tony Jones Memorial race for F600s heading another full programme at LEEWOOD. Other meetings on Sunday took place at PAC, INVICTA KENT, CONCORD, CAMBRIDGE, SPALDING and CENTRAL SCOTLAND, while DOWN raced as usual on Saturday.

At LEEWOOD the Tony Jones Memorial brought out nine F600s and was won by Terry Cox. Another excellent entry of 112 cars turned up to confirm the ever growing reputation of Leewood's Castle Hill Farm track.

After warming up with a bit of success at away meetings, Spencer Wanstall took INVICTA's major trophy for the Juniors, the Claydon Memorial Trophy, after starting the final from the back of the handicapped ten car grid and taking not much more than a lap to hit the front. The Junior Specials and Class 10 also contested their perpetual trophy handicap races, won by Brian Steward Jnr and Darren Cornwell. Otherwise it was a typically enjoyable Invicta meeting with 107 entries treated to generous race distances on the impeccably prepared track; stars of the day were probably the watering crew who, on a hot, dry, humid day, succeeded in keeping the dust down without getting anyone's car too dirty!

BIGGEST BAS YET

+ SHANAHAN WINS - BUT NOT AT BAS!

The Gloucestershire League moved into Javelin Park to host what turned out to be the biggest ever BAS round, with 781 entries and 771 drivers actually taking part. The weather stayed dry and the event was efficiently completed, all the finals being over by 5.30 pm. There was of course the usual quota of thrills, spills and controversy, most of it caught by our photographers:

Alternatives to the BAS were staged successfully by Nottingham and Solway clubs.

In Ireland, the Araglin Carnival meeting had to be abandoned on Sunday morning after torrential overnight rain. The rain continued all day, but that didn't stand in the way of an entertaining meeting at the WATERFORD RACEWAY near Dungarvan, where top honours went to regular Autograss racer John Shanahan, who won the trophy final after switching from his own 1-litre Micra to the car with which his son Jack was unbeaten in the Junior class in only Jack's second meeting.

BOB ROBINS MEMORIAL

In almost impossibly hot, sunny and dusty conditions, the St Neots club’s annual charity weekend of racing, fun and games drew an excellent turnout to the Wyboston track. The weekend came to a fitting end when Daniel Robins’ Class 1 Mini set a fast pace on the dry, dusty track to win the Champion of Champions and claim his grandad’s memorial trophy.

Another highlight was the Stock Hatch final in which Mark Hill took a hard earned third place, narrowly beaten to the line by Lloyd Vivier while Ravin’ Ray Smith, on his Stock Hatch debut, won in a record fast time.

The popular “Retro Race Day” on Saturday, featuring handicapped grid starts, attracted over 120 drivers and provided lots of action. Class 8 drivers Ian Spencer and John McBride called in just for the day (on their way from Manchester to North Shropshire!) and Ian continued his remarkable debut season with yet another class win. John Howseman brought out the Class 6 Mini he’d bought two days earlier, bounced it off the armco, rolled it heavily and then repaired it with a big hammer, ready to race on Sunday. The action continued on Saturday evening with wheelbarrow races, sack races, tug-o-war, etc, and the presentation of £2,000 to St Neots’ two nominated charities, the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research UK.

MARK'S WESSEX BrUnCh

The second annual running of the British Unmodifed Championship, at the Wessex club, Bearley Raceway in Somerset, was a relaxed and enjoyable day's club racing, with a bonus. The British Unmodified finals pitted all the Class 1 and Class 2 finalists against each either, and likewise Ladies' Class 1 and 2 and Juniors and Junior Specials, with generous prize money up for grabs. The title of British Unmodified Champion went to the furthest travelled driver present, Swansea's Mark Lewis. Becky Shaw won the Ladies' title and Matt Bishop the Juniors. Alongside the Unmodified competition there was a new title race "The Special One" and with the top Class 8, 9 and 10 proving evenly matched, Adrian "ART" Turner took a spectacular win in his Extreme Chevy Class 10.

Also this weekend EVESHAM ran the classic Alf Cope Memorial meeting at Dodwell on Sunday, and CONCORD ran the new Essex Open Championship at Cold Norton. Other events took place at CENTRAL SCOTLAND, YORK, SCUNTHORPE, NORTH WALES, LUDLOW, PENNINE, SPALDING and INVICTA KENT. Pennine's meeting feastured the third round of the British F600 championship, won by Bryn Hawkins - results and photos coming soon.

YORKSHIRE WINNERS AT CUMBERLAND OPEN

As the country enjoyed another hot and sunny race weekend on 26/27 June, Solway club staged the annual Cumberland Open Championship where their local racers, together with visitors from Scotland and Yorkshire, plus a strong contingent from Northern Ireland, enjoyed a well run and competitive event in an extremely relaxed atmosphere. Saturday's racing was completed in record time, allowing the visitors to explore the other attractions of the Hay Close venue before an evening of fun and games. On Sunday the club worked extremely hard to control a major dust problem without ever over-watering the track, and their efforts were rewarded with some close fought and spectacular finals, and a weekend completed with a complete lack of major incidents or accidents. The new Cumberland Open Champion is Andy Jefferson, whose Class 8 passed Glynn Bailey's Class 4 and Allan Weston's 6 round the outside of the last corner in the Champion of Champions race. The Ladies' title also went to Yorkshire Dales thanks to Katie Sunley's spectacular driving of Allan Weston's Class 6, and the Junior Champion was Whiterose driver Ayrton Widdup, with Jack Rawlinson winning the Junior Specials.

NORTHERN CHALLENGE HOTS UP

While the BAS round at Cwmdu was obviously the biggest (and most controversial) event of the weekend (see results below), there were two other season long championships reaching their second round; the Eastern Open Challenge returned to Spalding and the Pure Silk Northern Challenge paid its first visit to Central Scotland.

In the hot Scottish sunshine, Lochgelly attracted its biggest entry of the year so far, with the shortage of cross-border travellers compensated for by the growing number of local racers. A well supported Champion of Champions race produced the day’s closest finish, as Gary Reid’s Class 5 snatched the win on the line from Blair Robertson’s Class 1 Mini.

CWMDU BAS

Cwmdu's entry of 666 just exceeded the MAP Open total to make this the biggest attendance of the year so far. Again the meeting was a test of endurance with racing from 9 am to 8.45 pm on Saturday, while on Sunday it took 41 attempts to complete the 22 class finals. After a very wet start it didn't take long for the track to dry out and provide the usual spectacular and incident packed racing with Any Kershaw's roll in the Class 10 final being perhaps the most spectacular of the countless spills (also scroll down below the results for some more shots of Andy among Gary Jones' action pics)

STOCK HATCH CHAMPIONS

Rob Farrow and Mandy Clarke were crowned as National Stock Hatch Champions after the seventh annual running of the Stock Hatch Nationals, hosted for the fifth time by Pennine club at Darleymoor Raceway and sponsored by NGK spark plugs. After fine conditions throughout the four qualifying heats, the rain arrived for the finals and Scarborough Club Champion Rob, in his first season of Stock Hatch racing, mastered the slippery track to beat defending champion Tony Staples. Jimmy Gardner did it the hard way, changing a gearbox in the pits before racing through both the C and B finals to secure the last spot on the A final grid, eventually finishing third. Mandy Clarke headed a Scottish 1-2 in the Ladies' Championship, which was decided on points over five rounds. Four straight wins secured Mandy's title before the last race, in which she failed to finish as Julie Morris won that race to take third overall behind Fiona McIntyre.

The Stock Hatch event was the centrepiece of Pennine's Keith Kent Memorial weekend, which underlined its reputation as one of the most enjoyable club events of the year. Helping to make the meeting special were no less than nineteen drivers from Central Scotland club, and after the usual good natured England - Scotland rivalry, a high proportion of Pennine's superb trophies headed north of the border.

MIDDLETON'S MAP MAGIC

For the second year running, Weston-Super-Mare Class 1 driver Aaron Middleton took the MAP OPEN Champion of Champion honours at Dodwell raceway, Stratford-upon-Avon. What had been a typical MAP Open, with the year's biggest entry of 662 competitors, and slick and professional organisation rattling off over 250 heat races on a dry, dusty and polished track, changed dramatically during the finals as the hot weather broke and heavy showers transformed the track into a skating rink. In perhaps the weekend's most memorable race, Tracy Victory took over fourteen minutes to complete six laps and win the Ladies' Class 10 final - possibly the longest Autograss final ever! Unluckiest driver of the weekend was Rob Drake, who had Class 1 easily won to repeat his York success when the race was stopped due to unruly driving in the pack behind. Rob was boxed in on the restart and finished well down the field. Controversy continued as Mark Uka (Class 2) and Matt Thompson (Class 7) were stripped of their final wins for jump starts. The Junior Special final was stopped after the leaders tangled, with the win going to Matt Berrisford. The meeting incorporated the British Junior Championship in which Conner Griffiths mastered the wet track to take a runaway win, finishing up to a lap ahead of his rivals.

The weekend's other main event was the first round of the PURE SILK NORTHERN CHALLENGE hosted by the Solway club at Hay Close, Calthwaite, near Penrith, which attracted a good field of Northern and Scottish drivers. Our thanks to Steve Sewell for the photos below - more can be viewed HERE. The meeting saw the first final win for a NASA experimental Class 1 car; the 1124cc Saxo of Scott Robertson taking a debut win, while Joanne Nugent escaped unhurt after getting her AX rolled over in the Ladies' Class 1 final.

BLOBBY'S NORTH OF ENGLAND

& LEE EVASON IN THE MIDDLE

The North of England Championships, still one of the five most prestigious individual meetings of the season, attracted its smallest entry in the last twenty years (apart from the delayed 2001 event that clashed with the MAP Open). But it was probably no coincidence that drivers and spectators rated the 2010 North of England as one of the most enjoyable. Sunday’s dull, windy weather developed into heavy showers that really slowed the action down, but in contrasting warm and sunny conditions on Monday, the perfectly prepared track came into its own. After the 283 entrants had enjoyed an expanded programme of four five-lap qualifying heats, the finals provided close and spectacular racing, highlighted by one of the closest fought Class 2 races in memory. A fitting climax came when a single Champion of Champions race was run for all men and ladies’ class winners; overall North of England honours went to Mark “Blobby” Grice, who also took two class titles, while the top lady was Clare Horner.

Other meetings taking place over the weekend were the Middle of England Championships at STAR's Crudgington track; the Severn Valley Showdown at Withington, which drew the weekend's biggest attendance,  the May Speed Fest at West Waterford and a one day event at Central Scotland on Sunday. 112 entries at STAR guaranteed everyone plenty of track time during the relaxed and fun-filled weekend for which the Middle of England Championship is already well known in its second year. Lee Evason took top honours while Katie Sunley took the Ladies' title in Allan Weston's Class 6 and the highly sought after donspeed Trophy for Class 1 cars was won in a borrowed car by Richie Williams.

ALL IRELAND SUNSHINE

The first round of the All Ireland Autograss Series took place in Northern Ireland, at Down Autograss’ Maghaberry track, where despite heatwave conditions, the track was acclaimed by drivers as being as close to perfection as it’s possible to achieve! The Northern and Southern Irish drivers were joined by a small number of visitors from Scotland and Wales, and a relatively small entry of 96 meant that, although some fast, close and spectacular racing was seen, with a few minor mishaps, it could be enjoyed in a relaxed atmosphere. Top honours went to Class 1A driver Paul Hogan who at one stage cheekily re-passed John Shanahan’s Class 7 during the Champion of Champions race. The Welsh visitors won two classes, with Jonsi Bach in Class 4 and Endaf Owens, guesting in Cecil Haffey’s Class 5 and otherwise the honours were quite evenly shared between north and south. This year’s AIAS is only being contested over two rounds, so the Down results have set up some battles to be decided in the finals at West Waterford in September.

GRANT'S SCOTTISH OPEN

The fourth Scottish Open Championship, held at Lochgelly on April 15/16, ended with the most spectacular imaginable Champion of Champions race, with Ross Grant's Stock Hatch Citroen Saxo, Andrew Watson's F600 Special and Michael Nairn's Class 10 crossing the finish line three-abreast - Ross Grant just kept his nose ahead to become to fourth winner of the Scottish Open title. QUIET WEEKEND AT HOME

The weekend of May 8/9 was an opportunity for most drivers to support their home clubs, with a busy programme of meetings scheduled on Sunday at INVICTA KENT, ST NEOTS, SPALDING, SCUNTHORPE,SCARBOROUGH, SOLWAY, NORTH SHROPSHIRE, PENNINE, CWMDU, EVESHAM, BREDON HILL and WESSEX while in Ireland there were meetings at DOWN on Saturday and WEST WATERFORD on Sunday.

The number of clashing events meant that most meetings depended mainly on support from local members but the racing was none the worse for this. ST NEOTS had its smallest attendance for a long time, with 102 entries, but there were good grids and memorable action in most classes; Kraig Murley won the latest instalment in his Class 7 battle with Darren Lodge; George Tillson-Smith scored his first Class 2 final win in a car he's built in the last two weeks; Aly Ostridge took a spectacular Class 8 win; Dave King returned successfully in the vintage Derek Cross V6 Class 10 and Gary Taylor  beat the strong Class 1 field.

MAYDAY MAYHEM

The May Day weekend proved that club racing is alive and well. While 630 drivers signed on for the opening BAS round, hosted by SOUTH WALES LEAGUE at Castle Lloyd Farm, a healthy entry enjoyed a highly successful two day club meeting on LEEWOOD’s track at Castle Hill Farm! Smaller club events took place in CENTRAL SCOTLAND and WEST WALES, while the weekend was completed on Bank Holiday Monday with the thirteenth running of the STU NICHOLLS MEMORIAL meeting by Yorkshire Dales club at Thornborough.

The Dales meeting brought out 194 drivers for a day of sunshine, showers and spectacular racing, ending with Antony Ross taking the coveted trophy for the second time. Out of luck though was James Almack, whose self-built Renault Twingo based Class 7 showed promise until it came to grief in the final.

Leewood’s event was highlighted by the second round of the British F600 Championship, in which a field of 21 of the little screamers provided ultra-close racing on a fast and extremely well prepared track. Top honours went to John Aldred in his new self-built Kawasaki Special. The other classes all had plenty of track time with generous race distances throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile the BAS contenders had a long weekend, especially the Saturday, when racing started in dense fog and finished nearly twelve hours later in the dark! The threatened dismal weather stayed away though, and after two days of incidents, controversy and reruns the event was successfully concluded, with the track and facilities being a credit to the South Wales members.

Full reports of all the weekend’s events will be in Autograss Review no 180, due out on 1 June.

APRIL SHOWERS

The spring weather briefly broke on Sunday morning and most of the eleven race meetings taking place around the country had a more or less damp start as a result, but none was seriously affected and some good racing was enjoyed with National qualifying points being at stake at many of the meetings.

At CAMBRIDGE a superbly prepared track meant that the rain that fell before the start and through the first heats was no problem, and conditions remained good as the sun came out for the second heats and finals. The highlight was probably the day long Class 7 battle in which local favourite Kraig Murley, from just up the road in Yeovil, beat interloper Daz Mullen (shaking down Mark Wanstall’s ex-Guy Wynn Seicento), Darren Lodge’s Duratec Mini and former SEGTO Champion Russ Wallbank. In Class 1 Daniel Robins’ new Selby Mini was flying all day until Lee Deegan hit form in the final. There was even a spectacular finish to the often poorly supported Champion of champions race, with Jon Anderson sneaking through on the inside to go from third to first in the final yards.

Andrew Smith had a big roll in his Class 6.

NORTH AND SOUTH

Sunday 18 April saw eleven meetings taking place at INVICTA KENT, PAC, PENHOW, EVESHAM, NOTTINGHAM, NORTH WALES, YORK, SCARBOROUGH and SOLWAY. The season in Ireland finally got under way with  events at WEST WATERFORD and DOWN AUTOGRASS (two day King of Down meeting).

In Kent, the INVICTA club continues to grow, having already virtually doubled its membership over the past two seasons. Although several cars, including Derek Linch's eagerly awaited Citroen-Chevy Class 3, weren't ready, the opening meeting at Ivychurch attracted 100 entries. The track on Romney Marsh had been transformed from a lake a fortnight earlier and there was a full and very entertaining day's racing in fine sunny conditions. The fast track, and a very generous amount of laps, meant that the attrition rate was high, and quite a few dropped out before the finals, which were highlighted by a thrilling Class 2 race in which Dave Hewitt headed a five car battle for the lead, while Spencer Wanstall came from behind to win a very competitive Junior final.

INVICTA RESULTS:

CLASS 1: 1st IK22 Fred Carpenter 2nd IK69 Daniel Meheux 3rd IK134 Derek Keeler. CLASS 2: 1st IK76 Dave Hewitt 2nd IK252 Geoff Bishop 3rd IK157 Paul Cottrell. YORK attracted 139 entries to their first meeting, also on a track that had needed a lot of work to reclaim it from the ravages of winter. There were plenty of thrills and spills during a day that started with North Yorkshire's usual separate National qualifying races.

After spending the first four weeks of the season chasing the weather, it was very different on 11 April with racers spoilt for choice between seven excellent meetings at SOUTH SOMERSET, SEVERN VALLEY, RADFORD, PENNINE, NORTH SHROPSHIRE, ST NEOTS, CONCORD ESSEX. Severn Valley's meeting on the 2010 Nationals track at Withington proved the most popular, with 292 drivers signed on for what was the biggest single day meeting for several years. A long day's racing saw just one serious mishap, when Marc Paskell tripped over his father in law Phil Dyke! Photography by Gary Jones, www.garyjonesrallypics.co.uk

WORTH WAITING FOR

For those drivers who stayed to the end of Hereford's marathon three day Easter event, and the 40 or so who joined in just for Monday, conditions for the third day's racing were by far the best of the weekend. Eventually the sun shone on 106 signed on drivers, who enjoyed some fast racing through two heats and the finals. There was even some dust being kicked up in the Class 8 final as Ian Spencer scorched to his second final win of the year. Monday was trophy day at Hereford, with the deserving winners being as follows:

The only other weekend meeting to survive the weather was on Sunday at SCARBOROUGH, where 105 meeting-starved northern racers were greeted by a bone dry Hunmanby track that stayed that way until a brief hailstorm soaked the F600 final, towards the end of the afternoon. A combination of the approaching rain and the national qualifying format, with separate qualifying races, resulted in depleted grids for some of the finals, but highlights included the ancient v modern battle in Class 3, with Mark Little's classic Anglia beating Dave Dearden's splendid V8 BMW.

MAKING A SPLASH

Hereford were rewarded for their persistence in the face of the weather when the first 200-plus entry of the season contested the Sunday leg of the three day Easter meeting. The racing was run in bright and breezy condition, but the preceding days of rain left their mark. The task of towing virtually every vehicle into the venue led to a late start and, with a few further delays to clear the worst of the standing water off the startline area this meant that the programme had to be curtailed with two sets of heat run, but no finals.  Highlights included a winning return by Ian Stead, now in Class 9; the first win for Martin Gould's new breed Class 3, driven by son Sam, and another fine Class 7 win by Irish visitor John Shanahan.

EASTER ACTION UNDER WAY

This year's early date for Easter was bad news for Autograss with the weather forcing the cancellation of eleven race meetings, leaving just two events taking place; Hereford's well established three day event, and Scarborough's Easter Sunday fixture. The "KING OF DOWN" meeting in Northern Ireland was cancelled, as were YORK's Easter Monday event and the meetings at SCUNTHORPE, SOUTH WALES, LEEWOOD, SPALDING, NORTON RADSTOCK, INVICTA KENT, CENTRAL SCOTLAND and WEST WATERFORD, and PAC's Monday meeting. HEREFORD made the best of the conditions, starting with a low-key session on Saturday. 60 drivers took part and these early arrivals, including welcome Irish visitors John and Val Shanahan and Seamus O'Riordan, ran two sets of heats before worsening rain persuaded everyone to wait for the forecast improvement in the weather on Sunday and Monday.

OUTSTANDING OXTON

Nine race meetings were scheduled to take place in Britain and Ireland on 28 March, but one by one the dismal weather got the better of them, until the last club left standing was NOTTINGHAM. And just as they did a fortnight earlier, the Nottingham club delivered a superbly prepared track, with dry, bright and breezy weather making their main problem one of keeping the dust down.

190 drivers travelled to Oxton Raceway from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern and Southern Ireland to make this the busiest meeting of the season so far. Unfortunately proceedings were delayed by three major accidents. Anthony Bateman, in his beautifully prepared new Class 1 Mini, was pushed sideways at the start of his second heat and suffered one of the fastest rolls ever seen in Class 1 racing. Anthony was unhurt but his car was destroyed. Later on Clare Horner clipped wheels with another Class 8 and flipped; Clare was soon back out winning in Jim Nightingale's Class 7 car. Then in the rerun of Clare's race Heidi Deeley had a roll that resulted in her being hospitalised as a precaution after a lengthy rescue operation -we hope Heidi will be back in action soon.

       ACTION GALLERY

The finals were eventually completed, making full use of the extra hour of daylight. Highlights included a win in the Junior A-final by Jake Bartlett, in only his second meeting. Tom Bell dominated Class 4 on the shakedown outing for his new Saxo and other new cars making impressive debuts included Martin Gould's Class 3 Nova.

SUPER SEVERN VALLEY

Out of the five meetings scheduled for 21 March, just one succumbed to the weather, with PAC’s event being cancelled. Saturday’s heavy rain meant that the meetings at Evesham, Pennine and Scunthorpe suffered from some sticky and muddy going for the early part of their meetings before the tracks dried out somewhat in time for the finals. Everyone did their best to keep the meetings running and although a lot of shiny new cars ended up rather grubby, there weren’t many complaints heard from any of these meetings.

Severn Valley also did their best – and you can’t get much better than that. The entrance to the legendary Withington venue was a little slippery and the spectator areas were a bit soft under foot, but the track itself was as perfect as you can imagine. No mud, no dust, no watering needed, just a wide racing line with plenty of grip from the classic red Herefordshire soil, promoting fast and close racing all day. 150 drivers signed on including quite a wide variety of visitors taking advantage of the second-to-last time to try the track before the 2010 Nationals.

The day was interrupted by three major rollovers, although none of these could be attributed to the track – two caused by the same marker tyre straying from its position and one by wheel to wheel contact.  Otherwise the wide track with its high banked top corner led to very few incidents indeed. Two heats, finals and opens (poorly supported opens – is nobody interested in these any more?) were all completed by a very civilised 4.30 pm. And what a pleasure to see all the cars leaving the venue as clean as they were when they arrived!

Next weekend (March 28) the race programme has been thinned out with the early cancellation of meetings at Concord, North Wales and Solway. That leaves meetings expected to run at RADFORD, BREDON HILL, SOUTH SOMERSET, SOUTH WALES, NOTTINGHAM, STAR and CORK. Please keep checking the forum for any updates.

BUSY OPENING DAY

The 2010 season got under way on 14 March with four meetings taking place, at NOTTINGHAM, STAR, FOREST OF DEAN and NORTON RADSTOCK, while other planned meetings at South Wales, Scarborough and Central Scotland had to be cancelled. The four meetings that ran all enjoyed fine conditions and healthy turnouts, with the biggest predictably being at Nottingham, with 184 entries. The first race winner of the 2010 season was local boy John Boaden, while the dubious honour of first roller of the year went to Alan Stretton, in his first meeting after graduating from Juniors to Class 2. The biggest entries were in Class 8, where Tom Bendell beat a top quality field, and Class 7, where a thrilling final involving Rich Lee, PJ Bott and Karl Mosley ended with an official dead heat between Rich and Botty. Among other impressive performances the V8 powered BMW of Dave Dearden featured strongly in Class 3, while Ricky Beachamp raced his former Junior Special car in the senior classes, and at one stage was beating all the Class 10s!

Full report coming soon in Autograss Review 178.

STAR attracted 85 entries to the Crudgington track. Among the notable performances here, Rhys Jones moved from Class 6 to 7 and won first time out in the ex-Rupert Lomax car, while Ludlow visitor Jimmy Smith beat a strong local Class 8 field.

Norton Radstock had a slightly smaller entry for their first meeting on Welsh soil at Magor Raceway, but still enjoyed a very successful event, as did the Forest club, racing just a few miles up the A48 at Westbury on Severn.

Next weekend (March 21) sees the West Midland and MAP Leagues both kick off with meetings at SEVERN VALLEY and EVESHAM. The East Midland action continues at PENNINE, the CGTRO season starts at SCUNTHORPE and the first Welsh club event is at PAC. The planned two day event at Central Scotland has been cancelled; the Scottish season’s now due to start on 4 April.

RACE RETRO

NASA's stand at Race Retro, the International Historic Motorsports Show held at Stoneleigh Park on March 12-14, attracted plenty of interest over the three days. Thanks go to Mathew Scourfield, Lee Almond and Dan Mackenzie for loaning their cars for the show, while Terry and Sandy Williams and Mark Empson looked after the stand.

OVAL RACING EXPO

Grass racers from SEGTO and NASA once more provided much of the on-track action at the fifth annual Oval Racing expo, held at Arena Essex Raceway on 23/24 January. A revised format provided much more track time for the grassers, with the SEGTO and NASA cars combined into six classes that each took part in two twelve lap heats on Saturday afternoon, followed by 15 lap finals under the lights as part of the Rolling Thunder Show's evening race meeting. Several drivers then stayed over to take part in Sunday's varied programme of "demonstration" races. Probably the best race of the weekend was the Production B/Class 2 final, with NASA's Geoff Bishop and SEGTO's Ted Symes racing side by side for virtually the whole race. Antony Jackson put up his usual spectacular show to win the RWD Super saloon final, while other winners were SEGTO drivers Terry Mellish (Production A), Nicky D'Souza (FWD Super Saloons), Trevor Smith (Specials) and Ian Bailey (Juniors).

JUNIORS STEAL THE SHOW

Thanks and congratulations go to the drivers, constructors and supporters who put on such a fantastic show for Autograss at Autosport International 2010. The standard of the cars on show reached yet another peak, while the Class 7 and 8 drivers again provided the most spectacular action throughout four days in the Live Arena. However, for many the true stars of the show were the eight invited Junior drivers, Ash Bryan, Alice Bevans, Shannon Ellis, Hayley Empson, Nicola Mackenzie, Luke Saunters, Arran Sharp and Beth Tomkinson, who performed magnificently in eight beautifully turned out Minis in Saturday's Oval Racing Spectacular.

There'll be a full report of the show in Autograss Review 177, due out early February. In the meantime you can catch up on everything that happened in the show and the live action through our photo galleries - CLICK HERE.
