BENNETT'S BUGGY BEATS BLYTON

The annual end of season meeting on the Rallycross track at Blyton always draws cars from a wide variety of motorsports and this year the 107 car turnout comprised 78 from Autograss, 11 regular Rallycross drivers, 8 cars from the ANECCC Autocross scene, 7 Hot Rods from the local Scunthorpe stadium and three of the NORA Superlite off-road racers. The NORA buggies have always looked incredibly quick against the NASA Specials but had not scored major honours until this year when former Autograsser Jonathan Bennett took his 900cc Drakart to the Superfinal win. In the open wheel class final however Jonathan had been runner up to Bryn Hawkins' Class 8, while the other Class 8 driver on top form, Rallycross veteran Barry Hathaway, won all his heats before getting upside down in the final. Top National Rallycross contender Ash Simpson narrowly beat Andy Holtby's Class 7 to win the Super Saloon final and former Autograss champion Ben Cree took the Stock Hatch win for the Rallycrossers. The grassers took the wins in the Production saloon groups, thanks to Mark Empson and Andrew Owen, and the Modified Saloons with Steve Hathaway. A misty and drizzly early morning start gave way to  sunshine for the finals, and all classes enjoyed four heats, finals and open races, plus a generous lunch break to accommodate a Remembrance Day dedication on the old wartime airfield, with the Superfinal still completed bang on schedule at 3.30. Once more all the action's available on DVD from our friends at Westcountry Videos.

TARMAC & GRASS ACTION

The penultimate weekend of the Autograss season saw action on the tarmac of NORTHAMPTON INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY on Saturday night, followed by the final official Autograss fixture, the NOTTINGHAM BONFIRE MEETING on Sunday.

At Northampton, 86 drivers enjoyed unlimited practice time during the afternoon before racing got under way under the lights, with the programme extended to three ten lap heats and fifteen lap finals. Close and spectacular racing was seen in all classes; sometimes a bit too close, with quite a few race stoppages, a couple of heavy contacts with the wall and a Class 2 final that turned into a destruction derby, while Jack White stayed out of trouble for a deserved win. Fred Carpenter's AX saw off strong NASA and SEGTO opposition in Class 1 and other highlights included a superb battle in the Kent-dominated Class 3; Ollie Howell's Class 4 Mini fending off all the Sixes; Simon Roche recovering from early problems to outpace the mixed Class 5/7 field; a super winning drive by Gemma Stephenson in Class 8, although Tom Ellis had been unlucky to drop out while leading, and then an incredible battle in which Mike Liddiatt in the only surviving Class 9 withstood all the attacks the Class 10s could throw at him. A fast and furious Champion of Champions race ended with Dave Houghton's Skoda/Honda Pickup making a break from the chasing pack to complete a memorable evening.

At Nottingham on Sunday the Bonfire Meeting ended the NASA season as it had begun eight months earlier, in fine sunny weather with a bumper turnout of cars and drivers (207 entries) enjoying the well prepared Oxton track. As this was the final round of the three meeting Winter Series, there were no individual results from the day's racing as points were accumulated towards the overall Winter Series trophies. The Nottingham team kept the racing going non-stop, aided by very few major incidents, allowing time to round off the season with the infamous Nottingham Devil's Race. 30 cars started, with just a few eliminated after two red flags. Bryn Hawkins made a quick pit stop to refuel his Class 8 under the second red flag, and then set out to prove just how far a Class 8 will go on a tank of petrol. When he finally ran out, about 23 laps later, he was the last man left on the track and was then towed over the line to receive the last chequered flag of the Autograss season.

SHALE SPECTACULAR

Scunthorpe's Speedway and Stock Car stadium, the Eddie Wright Raceway, welcomed a strong field of Autograss racers to the fastest shale oval in the country on Saturday night. 150 drivers booked in, the best entry for a stadium event for many years, with 126 turning up on the night to produce some sensational racing. 52 races were completed between 3.30 and 8.30 pm. Some of the best action was the Class 7 duel between Pete Bott Jnr and Andy Kershaw, with Andy snatching the final from shale expert PJ. The closest fought classes were the Class 3s and F600s, while Class 8 provided no-holds-barred battles between the likes of Phil cooper, Mark Grice and Tom Chadwick. Relative newcomer Trevor Burrows ran with the best in the 8s, but ended up being the only one to get upside down. Also bad luck for Jordan Hampson (Juniors), Rob Milbourn (Class 6) and Russ Thompson (Class 9) who all hit problems within sight of victory. Topping off the memorable evening was the madcap commentary featuring Micky B and Sos - it will be worth buying the DVD from Westcountry Videos for that alone.

The following day SCARBOROUGH ran the only grass meeting of the weekend, and after heavy overnight rain, attracted a small and select field of local cars, plus a couple of Scottish visitors, for a day of fun racing. The day saw the debut of a possible future Class 10 star as Aston Nairns handed in his Junior licence and jumped into the older of Team Tango's two Class 10s, proving very fast and spectacular indeed. One total newcomer, Lee Harrison, chose this meeting for his debut in the ex-Richard Coates Honda Civic; he won his first ever race and by the end of the day had completed nine races! Commentator Micky B returned to the track by courtesy of "Mr Silly" Phil Wall and despite going through two Micras took the chequered flag in the "Devil's Race".

ST NEOTS FINALE

As the season started to wind down and there were just two race meetings to choose from on October 23. ST NEOTS staged the final round of the Eastern Open Challenge, and the continuing fine October weather helped bring out a turnout of nearly 180 drivers from far and wide for a busy programme featuring the usual heats and finals plus plenty of end of season open racing. The on-track highlight was probably the Class 7 final duel between Trevor Martin and Tony Goodsir - Tony was awarded the win by inches. The Eastern Open Champion of Champions titles went to Barry Ashmore, Lianne Teather and Ash Howard, while the Champion of the Day was Tom Chadwick after a superb exhibition of car control on a watered track. SCARBOROUGH held another late season event at Hunmanby. With all the recent fine weather biased towards the south and east, unfortunately the Scottish and Irish seasons came to an earlier finish, as this weekend's planned  meetings were cancelled.

NASA-SEGTO ROUND 2

The second round of the NASA-SEGTO CHALLENGE took place on the smooth chalk surface of Horndean Raceway, near Portsmouth, where a very warm sunny day welcomed a good turnout of racers from the two dirt based SEGTO clubs, while the NASA contingent disappointed in numbers (twelve cars and fourteen drivers) but all put up a good show against the SEGTO cars and provided plenty of spectacle for the large crowd. NASA's top performer was Neil Thomas, who took a convincing win in the Class 4/5/1450 Hot Rod group. Radford's Mark Barrett and Fearless Phil Fenton took their Class 7s to victory in the Super Saloon heats, but were beaten in the final by Laurence Connors' ex-Class 7 car. Will Barrett held off the quicker SEGTO cars to win the first Junior heat. The Specials had no challengers to the SEGTO cars but there was a creditable win for veteran Danny Stafford in his traditional Ford crossflow car. Champion of Champions honours went to former SEGTO racer Luke Stonehouse, returning to his old home track in his Spedeworth Stock Rod.

The NORTHERN CHALLENGE had its final round at York's meeting that also featured the final round of the British F600 Championship, with Andy Dingley crowned as champion; NOTTINGHAM staged round two of the Winter Series and season closing meetings took place at EVESHAM, WESSEX, STAR, and CONCORD.

NASA-SEGTO CHALLENGE

Overnight and early morning rain brought back memories of the last time the SEGTO Challenge visited Kent, three years ago, but this time, as soon as racing began, the sun came out. Thanks to the meticulous preparation by Derek Linch's Invicta team, it took just two or three races for the track to dry out and we then enjoyed perfect conditions for the rest of the day; no mud, no dust, not too hot and not too cold. The racing and driving standards matched the organisation and there were just two red flags shown all day; one for a fluffed start and one after a spectacular engine-blow up for Jack Bromley's Class 6. 77 NASA drivers were joined by 41 SEGTO visitors. Some of the best racing came from the Class 5s and 1450 Hot Rods with lead battles featuring Neil Thomas, Kieran Lonergan and Nicky D'Souza, with Kieran (the only NASA driver to travel from outside Kent) winning the final and then snatching the Champion of Champions on the last corner from Steve Diaper's Production A Micra.

After Saturday night bonfire and fireworks, with "beer tent" provided by Horse Power Trading, Pennine catered for 92 entries with visitors from all over the country, including West Waterford (!) and St Neots, finishing the trophy presentation by half five before the rain in the distance reached the track. Congratulations to Jodie Faulkner and Ben Harper, the new Autumn Showdown Champions and Linzy Allen as well as Ben “John” Gadsby on their repeat wins in the Pennine Club Championship – a double celebration for Linzi having just received confirmation of the legality of her BAS winning engine.

GRAND PRIX HEATWAVE

The fourth running of the SOUTH SOMERSET GRAND PRIX, coincided with the hottest October weekend since records began, which resulted in a relaxed and festive atmosphere, despite much of the racing being as hot as the weather. 190 drivers took part, with 120 of these also being involved in the team racing competition - thirty teams of four drivers accumulated points over the weekend, with members of the top three teams joined by other qualifiers in the individual Grand Prix Final, which saw Phil Cooper snatch the win on the line from past winner Becky Shaw. The team championship was won by "The Wannabees", featuring Angela Evans, Blobby Grice, Dave Houghton and Ian Spencer. The much publicised appearance by World Touring Car star Rob Huff added greatly to the atmosphere with Rob entering into the spirit of the event; he took part in "match races" with top lady drivers in all ten classes and even came back for second helpings of Class 2 and 7, as well as throwing himself into the Saturday night proceedings in the Oaktree clubhouse.

After the very busy weekend at the end of September, there were fewer meetings to choose from on 1/2 October as many clubs have moved events away from the "BAS reserve date". NORTH WALES staged the annual Hilary Kent Memorial meeting on Sunday, with 144 entries, while other Sunday meetings took place at STAR and SPALDING. Scotland and Ireland didn't share the southern heatwave and meetings at CENTRAL SCOTLAND and CORK were rained off.

EAST ANGLIAN OPEN

The last of the traditional League Opens for the year, the EAST ANGLIAN OPEN, took place on the St Neots track at Wyboston, with fine weather and excellent track conditions for a mainly local field of 134 on Saturday and 141 on Sunday. Each day featured a full meeting of two heats and finals, with perhaps the most spectacular action on each day being the Class 3 duel between Dave George and Phil Thompson. Saturday ended with the East Anglian Open titles, decided on points from a series of old-style open races, won by Jack White and Kirsty Empson. Sunday's programme was topped off by the Champion of Champions races for the titles of "East Anglian Fastest Man, Lady and Junior of the Year"; Nathan Saunders was top Junior, Linzi Allen won the Ladies' title and Russ Thompson's Class 9 snatched the Fastest Man race right on the line from new Junior graduate Shayne Deegan.

The meeting also featured the second (and last?) "Nationals" for the experimental Class 1 cars. In an all-Micra field, Mark Empson took the senior honours and Jack Whitmore won the Junior division.

It was a crowded weekend with STROUD & DISTRICT running their "Dash for Cash" at Javelin Park with a good entry braving wet conditions. The sun shone in the north west as SOLWAY staged two separate meetings on Saturday and Sunday to complete their season at Hay Close. NOTTINGHAM began their Winter Series on Sunday; other Sunday events were held at NORTH SHROPSHIRE. LEEWOOD, YORK, CONCORD and INVICTA. In Ireland DOWN's two day meeting was cancelled meaning that a good turnout of Irish grassers converged on CARLOW's "Irish Autograss Grand Prix"; a successful event despite wet conditions. The inter-club team competition was won by the "Mad Dogs of Mallow" while Declan Browne took the top individual honours.

STURTON'S BAS SUCCESS

The British Autograss Series ended on September 18/19 at Sturton & Stow Motor Sports Club's Caenby Corner Raceway, just three weeks after the Fastest Man on Grass at the same venue. Sturton hadn't held a BAS round since 2001, when they still had the use of the legendary Lincolnshire Showground track, but they used their experience of major events to good effect to produce a very smooth running  event which, despite a handful of major incidents, was all done soon after 3.30 on Sunday. Threatening weather at the start of the weekend have way to mainly fine, sunny conditions, with just one heavy shower to help keep the track in the best possible condition. Although it's a track known to be prone to polishing up, excellent track management meant that conditions didn't become really slick and dusty until the finals were under way. Those behind the scenes had a fair amount of stress to cope with as a few drivers applied pressure to overturn results, but to their credit these problems were contained and for the majority of competitors and spectators, this was one of the most enjoyable BAS meetings, on a par with the Kent finals of previous years.

Unlike previous BAS events there were several alternatives on offer. SEVERN VALLEY attracted a healthy turnout for the two days of their "Autumn Showdown" at Withington. There were smaller turnouts but enjoyable meetings for all cornerned at MELTON's two day event and GLOUCESTER's one day meeting. CENTRAL SCOTLAND contended with rather wet conditions and CORK had their annual Jer O' Donovan Memorial Cup day.

WILD WET WATERFORD

The All Ireland Autograss Series final was held concurrently with the Irish Fastest Person on Grass meeting at the WEST WATERFORD club's Ballysaggart track near Lismore. The meeting started in dense fog for scrutiny on Friday evening and finished at the Lismore House Hotel at 4 o'clock on Monday morning! After a few years of fine sunny weather for this event, this year was the complete opposite, with Saturday's conditions being the wildest and wettest the locals could remember. But after cutting Saturday's heats short (the track was still fast and grippy but the surface mud and water was too much to tolerate) an early start on Sunday meant the full programme was completed. The torrential rain finally cleared the Knockmealdown mountains on Sunday and in dry and windy conditions the track soon needed the water cart.

At the end of two very full days we were treated to two incident packed Champion of Champions races, both of which needed red flags and restarts. The Irish Fastest Person on Grass title went to local F600 driver Kenneth Cashel, while the All Ireland Champion of Champions went to Naas-based Class 8 racer Davy Curran.

The major UK event this weekend was the Yorkshire Open, staged by the YORKSHIRE DALES club at Thornborough. After three weeks with very little club racing, there were one-day meetings on Sunday at HEREFORD, RADFORD, PENNINE (Round two of the "Autumn Showdown"), SCUNTHORPE, NORTH WALES, SPALDING, CONCORD, INVICTA (round four of the Eastern Open Challenge) and SOUTH SOMERSET.

CLOSE ONE FOR CLARE

Download full Ladies' & Juniors' results

An excellent Ladies' and Juniors' National Championship, hosted by the West Midland League at Withington, and sponsored by Autosport International 2012, ended with the closest possible finish to the Champion of Champions race, with Clare Horner's Class 8 judged to have crossed the line fractionally ahead of Sarah Levics' Class 4 Mini. Meanwhile, in a unique double for the North Wales club, Arron Sharp followed up his "Fastest Junior on Grass" title by taking the Nationals a week later, while Kieran Sheffield won the Junior Specials title.

There'll be a full report in Autograss Review issue 187, but here's a quick run down of the classes:

JUNIOR CLASS 1 - 90 entries were reduced to 32 quarter finalists, 16 semi-finalists and then 8 finalists with pre-meeting favourite Arron Sharp unbeaten at every stage. There were to be no surprises in a very clean final, with Arron chased home by Conner Griffiths, Shayne Deegan and 2009 Champion Nathan Saunders, who made a great recovery from problems on the first day.

JUNIOR SPECIALS: An ultra-close final was headed by Tom Taylor until the very last corner, when Kieran Sheffield finally made his outside line work. Also racing on the outside, Matty Cobb came from the back of the pack to beat Cameron Mills for third.

CLASS 1: Defending champ Becky Shaw was top qualifier, but Alice Bell took a big lead early in the final. As Alice's car started bogging down on the watered track she was engulfed by the pack and Alice Bevans emerged to take the win from Debra Robinson, Sarah Trott and Alice.

CLASS 2: Qualifying dramas included the very last heat of the weekend which only had one finisher. That race eliminated the previously unbeaten Sarah Carden. Di Tomkinson rolled dramatically out of the final and the rerun then gave Sarah Trott a third title from Paula Rees-Williams, Leanne Huschka and Jade Morgan.

CLASS 3: Penny Smith looked unbeatable in the heats, but a poor start in the final left her struggling as Lisa Almond fought off a strong challenge from Donna Cole and Lianne Teather to take her second title, with Sally Shorter completing the trophy winners.

CLASS 4: Alice Bevans looked set for a double win as she led impressively in Rob Corbett's Micra, but Sarah Levics clawed back Alice's advantage and a brilliant last corner move put Sarah's Mini ahead at the flag, with Lisa Grasby's Stiletto and Claire Blackman's Pickup completing the top four.

CLASS 5: A collision in her second heat meant Nicola Jesse missed out on the final, but the other multiple past champion, Sandra Jones, remained unbeaten and won an all-Mini final, chased by Michelle Phillips, Linzi Weare and Sarah Bateman.

CLASS 6: Some fraught qualifying races were followed by a restarted final; despite being excluded from one of her heats, Sarah Carden qualified comfortably and then dominated the final in her ex-Chris Mullen 106, with Becky Smith, Jodie Faulkner and Yvonne Dockray claiming the other trophies.

CLASS 7: A full 24-car field completed their heats with very little incident, but a re-run of a two car run-off was definitely a first! Young Nicola Mackenzie was top qualifier, but the final saw Michaela Bevans regain her title, with Charlie Wright taking her best result in second from past champ Di Jones and Nicola, while defending champ Clare Horner borrowed Donal O'Brien's car, onlt for a fluffed start in the final to keep her out of the top four.

CLASS 8: It was a title swap for Michaela Bevans and Clare Horner; Michaela's chances vanished with a startline failure in her third heat. Sandra Jones was unbeaten in qualifying but a first corner spin left the door open for Clare Horner to take her tenth National title from Gemma Stephenson, Sally Stratton and Claire Winnall.

CLASS 9: Sue Herdman headed the qualifiers, while past champ Jane Baynton was launched on the first corner of the final. Kelly Paines led most of the way to take the win; Chris Raffel was briefly ahead before settling for second and Jane Baynton and Bev Candy filled the top four.

CLASS 10: This year the Tens had to qualify for their final. Carrie Mills won all her heats and went on to her third title after a spirited challenge by Jade Russell ended in a spin. The inexperienced Lauren Evans drove superbly for second ahead of Lynn Johnston and Angie Chilvers.

It's been another short week and we've had to give priority to getting the magazine out - we're still working on sorting and uploading our photos from the Ladies' and Juniors', Fastest Man on Grass and Border Counties Festival. Please keep checking the photo gallery page - they'll appear soon! Andrea's photos from the Ladies' and Juniors' may be seen now at www.absnapshots.co.uk

COOPS AND CLARE DO IT AGAIN

The 41st annual Fastest Man on Grass, sponsored by Autosport International 2012, attracted a total of 395 entries and provided all the action that this meeting’s known for, with the final stages of the meeting providing the opportunity to see some of the quickest drivers in the sport go head-to-head, regardless of class.  Two of the best races featured Phil Cooper; in his mum’s Class 9 he battled with Antony Ross’ Class 8, before switching to his own 8 and waging a similar duel with John Whitehouse’s 9. Meanwhile, in the “Fastest Saloon” run-offs we saw Mike Sullivan’s winning Stock Hatch challenge, and eventually beat, the quickest Class 7s! The main title races resulted in Phil Cooper and Clare Horner retaining their titles as Fastest Man and Fastest Lady on Grass, while Arron Sharp became Fastest Junior on Grass.

Otherwise, it was a fraught and hectic weekend, starting with a very wet and muddy track on Sunday morning, which was quickly dried and levelled during the day. As the track improved, the incidents increased and some wild driving by the 8s and 10s in particular meant that Sunday’s programme wasn’t quite completed, throwing Monday’s race order into confusion. By Monday the track was perfectly groomed, quickly becoming slick and dusty until an overdue watering produced a fast and grippy surface for the feature race. There was an exceptional amount of damage done, with thirteen rollovers filmed by West Country Videos, including one that Westcountry’s Jeff Guyett reckoned was the biggest he’d ever filmed, as Tom Page destroyed his Class 7 Riley Elf.

All the traditional August Bank Holiday events took place, so there was a choice of four race meetings in England, plus one in Ireland. The BORDER COUNTIES AUTOGRASS FESTIVAL featured three separate, and very full, days of racing on Saturday, Sunday and Monday; the new track at Monkland, near Leominster wasn't as unusual in layout as we'd been led to expect, but was extremely long, wide and fast. INVICTA KENT ran their annual two-day meeting at Ivychurch, with much planned in the way of off-track fun and games as well as the racing action. WESSEX merged the "British Unmodified Championship" with their well established Bank Holiday trophy meeting, running on Sunday and Monday at Bearley.

BAS AND ALTERNATIVES

There were four Autograss events held on 20/21 August - one each in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. After the oversubscribed Javelin Park event, round four of the British Autograss Series, hosted by the WASA League at Magor, returned to a more “normal” level of attendance with 504 cars and 608 total entries. WASA, once one of the biggest leagues, but now one of the smallest, excelled themselves to produce an event acclaimed by many as the best BAS round of the year so far, with the track, racing, facilities and atmosphere all highly praised.

All the results (except, once again, for the Junior Specials) are online at www.basautograss.co.uk and full photographic coverage can be found at www.absnapshots.co.uk. The missing Junior Special BAS results are: 1st NS155 Matt Berrisford, 2nd SR46 Matt Booth, 3rd NW200 Kieran Sheffield, 4th C9 Cameron Mills, 5th R240 Sophie Morgan, 6th YS73 Matt Bishop, 7th NS15 Dan Owen, DNF S916Y Wes Green

There were three “BAS alternative” events laid on, including rounds of the two regional championships, the Northern Challenge, which paid its annual visit to CENTRAL SCOTLAND to form the second part of a double header weekend at Avonbridge, and the Eastern Open Challenge, which had its third round at CONCORD’s Cold Norton track.

Eastern Open Challenge points to date may be viewed here; Northern Challenge points aren’t yet available (but we’ll be pleased to publish them when they are!)

In Ireland, there was a well attended meeting at CARLOW where Carlow’s own “Fastest Person on Grass” trophy went to Danielle Barratt and another prestigious trophy, the Jim Dimond Cup, was won by Kevin Roche.

SPENCER STOKES UP

On Tuesday night, August 16, Autograss cars returned to Chesterton Stadium, Stoke on Trent, for the first time since the Foot & Mouth outbreak of 2001. Although there'd been countless verbal promises of attendance, just 16 cars appeared on the night, split into FWD and RWD classes. Fresh from a debut win in Wales in his ex-Phil Cooper Class 9, the Autograss shale king Ian Spencer brought his familiar Class 8 and dominated the RWD/Specials final, while Andrew Owen's Class 2 Nova won the FWD final. With a power failure knocking out the stadium lighting, the finals were rushed through in the fading daylight before the F2 Stock Cars raced their final in almost pitch darkness! There should be a return visit to the much improved Loomer Road track later in the year.

STOKE RESULTS:
FWD HEAT 1: 1st R313 Mark Barrett 2nd NW297 Andrew Owen 3rd WR143 Sam Begley. FWD HEAT 2: 1st NW297 Andrew Owen 2nd WR666 Jasper Aspinall 3rd WR143 Sam Begley. FWD FINAL: 1st NW297 Andrew Owen 2nd  WR143 Sam Begley 3rd LM36 Glen Jackson. RWD HEAT 1: 1st R31 Darren Anslow 2nd R321 Garry Emms 3rd LM292 Colin Patten. RWD HEAT 2: 1st NS818 Ian Spencer 2nd LM50 Ian Davidson 3rd SC97 Paul Lockwood. RWD FINAL: 1st NS818 Ian Spencer 2nd SC97 Paul Lockwood 3rd R95 Phil Fenton.

WINN WINS THE MONEY

The weekend after the Nationals featured a good choice of meetings, including the SOUTH WALES OPEN ("The Fastest Person on Welsh Grass") at the Nationals venue where Huw Jones followed up his Nationals runner-up position by taking the top honours (photo by Gary Jones www.garyphotos.zenfolio.com)

SCARBOROUGH's annual  "Dash for Cash" at Hunmanby comprised a "fun day" on Saturday, with the main event on Sunday. A good attendance gave healthy grids in all the saloon classes, despite a shortage of Specials, but in the end it was the open-wheelers that took all three of the "big money" races; Dave Winn and Gemma Stephenson in their Class 8s and Wes Green in his Junior Special.

NATIONALS 2011 - ROB'S REPEAT

With the National Championships being held on Welsh soil for the first time since 2002, Welshman Rob Corbett was the only 2010 Champion successfully to defend his title. Rob's side-by-side duel with Huw Jones in the Class 4 final was one of the closest fought races of a generally spectacular weekend, and Rob then went on to win the Champion of Champions race for the second year running. The changeable weather dominated the meeting, with several heavy showers damping the track, but the dire weather that many were expecting blew past the picturesque venue and, despite a couple of "problem" races, the event reached a record early finish.

Download full Nationals results here

There'll be the usual comprehensive report in our next issue, but here's a brief run-down of the classes:

CLASS 1 ... top qualifier Daniel Robins was squeezed out at both attempts at starting the final; when it went the distance Tom Roberts led all the way, only to be excluded after post race scrutineering. 2010 Champ David Kay closed right up in second but suddenly slowed at the finish, which meant the title eventually went to Tom Bell, whose TBR engines ended up filling the first three places.

CLASS 2 ... Tim Harber's five year winning streak finally ended as Lee Evason dominated the final. Behind Lee, a battle between Alan Suttle, Tim Harber and Lloyd Morgan saw Lloyd pass the other two in one move entering the last lap. Tim then spun out, Alan was black flagged and an unwanted re-run was called. The drivers planned to run in formation and maintain their finishing positions, but in the end there was just a two-car run off for third between two drivers who were unaffected by the original incident! Damian Harris' car went sick, but Ben Gadsby sportingly contrived to give Damian his place back! More controversy came when Lee Evason was excluded, giving Lloydy Boy the title.

CLASS 3 ... Martin Gould and Adrian Joyce were unbeaten in their heats and unbeatable in the final, with Martin taking his fourth title and Adrian closely chasing him home. The battle behind ended with a last lap collision that took out both the Almond brothers, while Neil Corbett came through to third.

CLASS 4 ... Darren Grasby's Stiletto and Rob Corbett's Micra won all their heats, but Darren spun away his chances in the final, leaving Rob to fight a neck-and-neck duel all the way with the similar car of Huw Jones - the Micra master just held off his young Welsh rival, while Mark Hoppé's Peugeot fended off a gaggle of Minis for third.

CLASS 5 ... red flags flew as Charlie Edley spun out after a super qualifying performance. Colin Chilvers had crept forward a fraction at the start, before getting away last, but carried a two place penalty into the rerun, which he "won" very convincingly. The second place battle between Billy Davis and Les Grice was therefore for the win, and the young Irishman finally succumbed to give the York veteran his first National title at last.

CLASS 6 ... Jason Ballantyne's form this year had made him a hot favourite and he didn't disappoint, qualifying at the top of the list before holding off Ben Gould all the way, giving the Solway club its first National Champion. Defending champ Andrew Smith chased his club-mate Martyn Janes in fourth while local man Paul Meli was well in contention until his car slowed.

CLASS 7 ... qualifying form confirmed Phil Rogers' position as hot favourite, while John Deegan and Neil Rawlinson both looked capable of upsetting the local hero. But in the end nobody was upset as we saw the most popular imaginable result - new grandad Gareth Thomas celebrated his 30 years' loyal service to Class 7 racing with a faultless drive to hold off "Billy", while Richard Dunwell bounced back from an accident the week before to drive the race of his life for third.

CLASS 8 ... with champ Geoff Berrisford having to settle for midfield positions and Russ Shepherd eliminated by a spectacular roll, the men on blistering form in the heats were Phil Cooper, Mark Grice and Antony Ross. But it was 2009 champ Steve Mills who headed a dusty cone-scattering final until the last lap, when Rossi dived past to take the win, while the wheel-banging manoeuvre dropped Steve to third behind Phil Cooper.

CLASS 9 ... Phil Cooper started favourite after three dominant heat wins, but a watered track left the final wide open. Three times Class 8 Champion Andy Hornshaw led all the way while Phil Cooper carved through from mid-pack to finish the race on Andy's tail. Sam Gould was an impressive third to complete his family's set of Nationals trophies.

CLASS 10 ... the action was fraught all weekend - in Saturday's second heats there were eight consecutive red flagged races, the incidents including a roll that eliminated strong contender Vinny Gibbons. It was therefore no surprise when it took five efforts to complete the final. Along the way another favourite, Derek Leech, was eliminated in a first corner roll, while one stoppage came when local man Marc Jones was pulling away towards a possible shock win. The last attempt came in a rainstorm, with Lee Seagreaves taking the win after his car had gone on fire twice during the weekend.

CHAMP OF CHAMPS ... On a very wet track after the rain cleared, Tom Roberts' Mini led well for six laps, before Rob Corbett came past. In the closing stages Rob was struggling to pass Andy Hornshaw while Antony Ross rapidly closed in, but Rob crossed the line a fraction ahead.

UNCROWNED KING OF THE HILL

Bredon Hill's annual King of the Hill meeting, traditionally run the week before the Nationals,  proved as popular as ever, with 166 drivers signed on for a full day's racing in warm, dry conditions at the Hilltop Raceway. Unfortunately, though, the main titles of King of the Hill and Queen of the Hill were not decided after an incident at the start of the King of the Hill race - Class 1 winner Darryl Smart was launched over the wheel of a Class 10 car and, with Darryl requiring medical attention, time ran out for a restart. The Junior title was won by James Reid, whose Mini held off Alex Taylor's Special.

CORK'S FASTEST JUNIOR

Cork club's two day Junior Championship meeting attracted a small entry, mainly comprising local drivers in Class 1A cars, but proved that a lack of numbers doesn't necessarily mean a lack of action as the fast and challenging Castletownkenneigh track provided close and hard fought racing all weekend. Cork's main strength is in its Junior ranks so for the third year running the Juniors were given pride of place. While other classes raced over seven heats and finals, the Juniors had nine heats and class finals to qualify them for the Irish Fastest Junior on Grass trophy race. Steven White won the Junior Class 1 final; Stephen O'Driscoll took Junior Special honours and Stephen O'Neill won the very hard fought Class 1A category. The final handicap race provided controversy and two reruns, but Steven White ended up taking the major trophy.

AIDAN AGAIN

Aidan Murphy took his second big win in two weeks when he drove his Class 2 Micra to victory in a hectic finale to the Araglin Carnival meeting. Aidan thus got his hands on one of Ireland's most prestigious trophies, the Tim Barry Shield, presented by West Waterford Club President J P Houlihan. The unique Araglin event, part of one of Ireland's longest established local carnivals, was held for the first time over two days, with three rounds of racing on Saturday evening followed by two more heats, finals, handicap races and the winners' race on Sunday. Despite changeable weather conditions there was some excellent racing in front of a large crowd on the very long, fast track that runs round the outside of Araglin's community sports field.

On a rather larger scale, in terms of competitor numbers at least, round three of the British Autograss Series was hosted by the Wiltshire League at Javelin Park, Gloucester, attracting a series record of 839 entries. The sheer numbers, combined with the weather, meant that the meeting had to be cut short before the finals; results for the heats should be available in due course at www.basautograss.co.uk. and full photographic coverage will be at www.absnapshots.co.uk

The only other meeting run this weekend was at NOTTINGHAM.

ALL IRELAND ROUND 2

Top honours at the second round of the All Ireland Autograss Series went to Carlow driver Aidan Murphy, who had the most successful weekend of his career so far, being unbeaten in all of his five Class two races before taking a clear win in the Champion of Champions race, chased home by Class 1A final winner John Fyfe, impressive youngster James Kent's Class 5 Fiat 126 and Class 8 winner Paul Moore. Lone visitors from England and Scotland joined a representative turnout of Northern and Southern Irish racers at Down Autograss' Maghaberry track, where a couple of heavy showers on Saturday did the track no harm at all before dry conditions took over on Sunday. A few spectacular incidents punctuated the weekend, notably a massive roll that destroyed Martin Wallace's wild Ford V6-powered Seat Arosa in Class 6. The experimental K11 Micras made up nearly half the field in Class 1, with Mark Empson's NASA 1 car joining the locals, while Johnny Arthurs took the NASA 99 car to victory in the Junior final. As always in Ireland though, trophy positions were based on accumulated points over the four heats and finals.

The only other two day meeting this weekend was one of the highlights of the club racing calendar; the fifth running of the Bob Robins Memorial Trophy at ST NEOTS, with the popular "Retro Race Day" on Saturday, followed by a fun and games evening and the main charity race meeting on Sunday. At the end of the full and smooth running weekend of racing, Lincolnshire Class 8 driver Barry Ashmore was the latest recipient of the Bob Robins trophy.

All the photos from St Neots can be viewed at www.absnapshots.co.uk. Sorry, results are not yet available.

JULY ALREADY!

A varied programme of events was on offer on the first weekend of July. It was a busy weekend in the South East as CONCORD staged their first South of England Open at Cold Norton, with two separate days' racing and £1,000 prize fund on offer. INVICTA KENT were also racing on Sunday.

SEGTO racers were  treated to the first "Pavement Challenge" meeting at Arena Essex Raceway, with action on Saturday evening and all day Sunday. Unfortunately the response from the SEGTO clubs was very poor, but the programme was filled with all the regular Arena Essex/Rolling Thunder Show favourites, producing a busy weekend's racing, highlighted by an appearance for the Grand Prix Midgets, contesting their European Championship. EVESHAM staged the prestigious Alf Cope Memorial meeting at Dodwell on Sunday, where the historic trophy was taken away by Stroud's Luke Smith in his Class 4 Mini. Other Sunday meetings took place at CENTRAL SCOTLAND, YORKSHIRE DALES, YORK, SPALDING, PENNINE, LUDLOW, NORTH WALES, WESSEX and CARLOW. At Pennine the 75 entries included Class 4 Imp legend Graham Smith, sharing a Class 1 Mini with his granddaughter Courtney Salmon.

WAR OF THE ROSES

The second annual "War of the Roses" meeting attracted the biggest recent turnout of 180 entries to Leewood's Castle Hill Farm track in heatwave conditions. At the end of it all last year's Champions, the White Rose of Yorkshire, were toppled by the Red Rose of Lancashire, with Leewood Chairman Tim Clancy taking the trophy on behalf of his team. Individual Champion of Champions winners were Class 8 racers Dean Barnes and Rosemary Glover, while the losers included Sharon Lockett, who survived an attempt to burst her balloons although her Citroen wasn't as lucky!

CUMBERLAND CHAMPIONS

The Cumberland Open is one of the younger regional open title meetings, but it's established its place as one of the most enjoyable weekends on the calendar. After the baking hot 2010 event this year's was run in mixed conditions - overnight rain gave way to an overcast and showery day on Saturday, before warm sunny weather moved in on Sunday. A healthy mixture of English, Scottish and Irish racers made for a great atmosphere as five sets of heats and class finals built up to the Cumberland Open races, won by Matt Astbury, Matty Cobb and Michelle Arnett. The other big winner was Solway club after investing a great deal of effort and money in a new packed clay track surface for this season. Solway were already known to have one of the nicest venues in the UK - now the drivers present would all agree they also have one of the best prepared tracks.

The weekend also saw a few "different" incidents. Roger Jefferson spun his Class 9, and while rejoining pulled such a wheelie that he eventually toppled onto his roof. Thanks to Steve Sewell for catching this one - more of Steve's shots may be found at www.stevesewellphotography.co.uk

Jane Little's flat-out approach saw her completely clear the armco and plough into the neighbouring woods ... in a Class 1 Mini.

And there were no finishers in the Ladies' Specials final after leader Lynn Johnston lost a wheel entering the last corner.

Other noteworthy events included no fewer than three NASA experimental Micras qualifying for the Class 1 A-final, with two of them also featuring in the Junior A-final.

After there were just two NASA meetings the previous weekend there was a full schedule planned for June 26. The traditional WEST WALES OPEN was reduced to a single day event this year, but remained a prestigious title with quality trophies to match, at the usual PAC venue. The second annual "War of the Roses" at LEEWOOD promised to be very well supported, having captured the imagination of many Northern racers who had to declare on which side of the Pennines their loyalties lay! CAMBRIDGE hosted the first of five rounds in the Eastern Open Challenge. Other Sunday meetings took place at NOTTINGHAM run as a memorial meeting for Mick Wyld, SCUNTHORPE, CONCORD, WESSEX and CORK. GLOUCESTER's planned meeting was cancelled some time ago due to venue restrictions; STAR also called their meeting off while the weekend heatwave came too late for CONCORD with one bend of their track under water.

Here are a few imaged from the sunny West Wales Open, courtesy of Gary Jones www.garyphotos.zenfolio.com, including a good Class 7 win by young Tomas Rees, the return of former Class 10 star Paul Harris in a 9, Teifi's Gareth Jones and Aled Dark in action, and a return to Class 8 by Phil Rogers.

YORK BAS HIGHLIGHTS

Among all the wheelies, Karl Mosley was the champion, holding his poise for the length of the straight.

Flying Specials were the rule rather than the exception.

Brotherly love demonstrated by the Taylor boys in Junior Specials

Tim Harber came uncharacteristically unstuck; Gary Ford had his second major roll of the year, while Becky Shaw's tumble closed the 6-hour long first heats

In Paul Watson's absence, Brian Beattie had the classic of the week

Tommo and Nicola took Champion of Champions honours, but Tommo was seen looking for a more competitive mode of transport

AUTOGRASS REVIEW SEND OUR BEST WISHES TO TONY McKENNA FOR A FULL RECOVERY FROM HIS INJURIES SUFFERED IN AN OFF TRACK INCIDENT AT YORK.

AN ALTERNATIVE WEEKEND

BAS round 2 at York dominated the weekend Autograss schedule to the extent that the only other club to put on a meeting was West Waterford - where a highlight was Alan O'Keeffe battling through a 15-car field in the Champion of Champions race.

At York the 600 plus entrants faced a soggy scene on Saturday morning after torrential overnight rain, but as usual the York team, particularly Dave Henley's track preparation team, proved equal to the occasion and it wasn't long before dust was rising. In response to the conditions the classes were run in a straight reverse order, providing an interesting change to the usual routine.

Most of the results as ever are available for download at www.basautograss.co.uk - plenty of pics also available on the net including www.absnapshots.co.uk

But there was still plenty of interesting action for anyone who wanted to go looking for alternatives. At Coventry Stadium on Saturday night the grassers made their second appearance of the year by courtesy of Startrax, with more to come later in the year. Back in February there was a rather muddy start but this time track conditions were perfect from the outset, with 14 Super Saloons and 9 Specials providing some spectacular action. West Wales traveller Dean Tipping took the Specials final and local man Fearless Phil Fenton conquered the shale in the Super Saloon final - and no sooner was that over than race co-ordinator Darren "Stumpy" Anslow decided everyone was going out again for an extra Allcomers' race, meaning that most drivers raced more laps than in a month of grassing.

COVENTRY RESULTS:

Final: 1st PAC410 Dean Tipping 2nd S41D Kenny Smith 3rd H150 Phil Dyke. Allcomers: 1st LM292 Colin Patten 2nd S41D Kenny Smith 3rd H150 Phil Dyke.

Full grids and plenty of laps were also to be seen at our chosen Sunday venue, Southern Autosport's Horndean Raceway. The super smooth chalk oval near Portsmouth was in great shape, and with neighbouring club Tongham cancelling their clashing meeting, there was an excellent turnout of SEGTO racers for a well run and entertaining meeting. NASA drivers will have their own chance to sample Horndean later this year as it's the venue for round two of the NASA-SEGTO Challenge on October 16.

ROB AND MANDY'S REPEAT SPLASH

For the second year running, the NGK Stock Hatch Nationals was run in perfect racing conditions on Saturday and in persistent rain on Sunday. And for the second year running, Scarborough's Rob Farrow splashed home on the flooded Darleymoor track for a convincing win, chased by former champion Tony Staples, Pennine's Ben Gadsby, and Essex's John Sullivan. The other Essex contender, Mike Sullivan, was unbeaten in his first two heats before his gearbox exploded, but the Sullivans jointly won the best turned out car trophy.

The defending Champion also won through in the Ladies' Championship - despite a change of car, club and surname Mandy Kennedy took her Fiat Punto to victory.

Rob Farrow's victory means that there'll be a defending champion racing on home ground next year as the usual drivers' vote determined that the 2012 Stock Hatch Nationals will be held on a sunny weekend at Scarborough.

The Stock Hatch event ran alongside Pennine's annual Keith Kent Memorial meeting which despite the dreadful weather on Sunday produced some spirited competition between the English drivers and the usual strong contingent of Scottish visitors.

ALL IRELAND ROUND 1

The 2011 All Ireland Autograss Series kicked off at Down Autograss on 4/5 May with a slightly disappointing entry of 102 drivers; with two of this year's three rounds due to be held at Down the entry was dominated by the Northern drivers, with 28 drivers representing Southern Irish clubs (although the Down club now draws a fair number of members from the south) one from Wales and the multi-national John Wilde representing North Shropshire! Dry and bright conditions on Saturday produced some spectacular racing on Cecil Haffey's perfectly prepared Maghaberry track before persistent rain moved in on Sunday; track conditions remained as good as they could possibly be, and nearly all the entrants opted to carry on racing in the wet. Four six lap heats and eight lap finals made the event good value for all, and despite the wet there were some close run finals - notably Davy Curran's win in the fourth attempt at the Class 8 showdown. Not at all close, however, was James Jess' Champion of Champions win in his Class 1 Mini - it took Class 9 winner John Fuller until the last lap just to unlap himself!

CANNING'S MAP OPEN

Martyn Canning took his Class 2 Micra to victory in the Champion of Champions race to claim the coveted Eric Carlin Memorial Trophy at the end of a busy, dry, dusty and highly successful MAP Open. The contrived and much discussed clash with the West Midland Open meeting appeared to affect MAP not at all, with a total signed on entry of 660 drivers - just two less than last year (to be confirmed when we get the official results). Despite this the full programme, including the new for 2011 semi-final stage, and the usual masses of race stoppages and reruns, was all completed in good time.

Full MAP results coming soon; in the meantime here are a few action highlights - and no, we can't work out how Clint Fowles saved his Class 2!

Look out for the full MAP photo galleries from www.absnapshots.co.uk

THE WEST MIDLAND OPEN

Although it was a shame to devalue the historic West Midland Open title by clashing with MAP, the meeting itself, held at the Cwmdu club track at Lyonshall, was a great success - well supported but more relaxed than MAP, giving drivers a lot more track time (three heats and finals on Saturday, two heats and finals on Sunday). We hope to have the full results soon.

THE NORTHERN CHALLENGE

The under-promoted Northern Challenge had the first of its five sounds at Solway, together with round four of the British F600 Championship - more details to come. The Northern Challenge continues at Yorkshire Dales on July 31 before visiting Scotland on August 21.

BANK HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

Severn Valley's meeting attracted 316 entries, just one short of York's total, with 86 of them braving the weather to race on the second day. Highlights included a spectacular Class 7 final battle between Phil Rogers and Gareth Thomas, while Daniel Robins managed to win both versions of the Class 1 final! All the photos can be found on www.absnapshots.co.uk, or follow the link from our gallery page.

STAR's Middle of England Championship although, in common with all the other holiday meetings, somewhat wet on day two, was acclaimed a great success both on and off track by those who took part. Full photographic coverage of this meeting can be found at www.bangersandsmash.co.uk

NORTH OF ENGLAND

The first of this year's "classic" Open meetings, the North of England Championships at York, took place in varied weather conditions. After a wet start on Sunday, the track quickly dried out, producing perfect conditions for much of the day until the track eventually became slick and polished. However, the rain returned overnight and persisted for much of Monday, making the third heats and finals somewhat slippery and messy. 317 drivers signed on and 313 actually took part, including welcome visitors from Scotland and Northern Ireland, although numbers were much reduced for Monday's heats. Although some features, such as the traditional hospitality, were missing, the York team under new chairman Blobby Grice concentrated on the on-track action and the meeting ran virtually without a hitch. There was only one significant incident when Vinny Gibbons rolled in his second heat; by the time the ambulance had entered the track to look for him, Vinny was parked back in the rerun lane! The weekend ended with the Champion of Champions race, won by Phil Cooper in his Class 8, with Clare Horner, entered as defending champion, taking the ladies' award.

Please note – some of the ladies’ class results are unconfirmed. Names in red were awarded class trophies although they did not complete finals; names in blue didn’t apparently receive trophies but we haven’t yet worked out why!

Results are to follow, we hope, of the two other major Bank Holiday events, the MIDDLE OF ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP at STAR and the SEVERN VALLEY "Spring Showdown", both of which were successfully completed despite also suffering from the weather on Monday

DOUBLE HEADER IN IRELAND

May 20/21 .... the first of several trips to Ireland this season, this time for a double header of National qualifying rounds in the North (at Down Autograss) and South (at Carlow).

Despite a wet and windy Saturday afternoon at DOWN, the track confirmed why many rate it as the best in the UK by remaining in perfect condition and producing some good racing for the entry of 52 drivers, with the best action probably coming from a full grid of Class 6s; the 7s were also out in good numbers while the classes with smaller entries also provided their fair share of interest.

After heavy overnight rain, CARLOW enjoyed a sunny and breezy day on Sunday, with just one brief shower. After the hard work of obtaining permanent planning permission, the club’s made a brilliant job of reconstructing their track after a year’s absence and their only problem was a modest amount of dust. Classes 7 and 8 provided the biggest fields, and spectacular action, although the closest race of the day was the three-way battle in the Class 2 final. Class 2 winner Mike Fuller went on to take the Champion of Champions race by inches from young James Kent, the Junior Special graduate being one of the most impressive drivers at both Down and Carlow with his J&J Keating prepared Class 5 Fiat 126.

Back in the UK NOTTINGHAM hosted the latest East Midlands qualifying round, but the day will be remembered not so much for the racing as for the impressive and moving tribute to the late Mick Wyld, that saw virtually every car present joining in a slow parade lap round the track.

SCOTTISH OPEN

Keith Matthews became the first repeat winner of the SCOTTISH OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP title after a typically close Champion of Champions race that completed a very enjoyable weekend’s racing on the promising new Central Scotland track at Avonbridge, near Falkirk. Although only one driver travelled from south of the border (Northumberland based Junior Special pilot Matty Cobb), the Scottish regulars, including an encouraging number of newcomers to Autograss, laid on entertaining action throughout the efficiently run five heats and finals. At the end of the Champion of Champions race Keith Matthews, who’d held off the ever improving Allan Kerr all weekend in Class 9, finished about nine inches behind the Class 5 of Gary Reid, but Gary was dropped two places for moving some cones at the start of the race, accepting the verdict with good humour. Junior honours went to Sean Devine and Muzza Pryde, while Rosie Nairns took her Tango Mini to the main ladies’ trophy.

May 8 .... 95 cars with 101 drivers signed on was the smallest attendance for some time at ST NEOTS but the meeting proved a great success with the new track surface now in excellent shape producing close and largely incident free racing. The day was marred only by a heavy shunt for Class 6 Metro driver Tony Jackson (CA77) who hit the armco and rebounded across the track into the path of the following cars. We’ll look forward to seeing Tony back in action soon.

STU NICHOLLS MEMORIAL

Traditionally the first major trophy meeting of the year is the STU NICHOLLS MEMORIAL at Yorkshire Dales. 168 drivers signed on, including many who’d made the overnight trek from West Wales. A sunny but very breezy day meant that the heats were dominated by severe dust problems, although there were no major incidents. A thorough watering during the lunch break transformed the track and led to an excellent set of finals. The trophy race, with all men’s and ladies’ class winners invited, but no reserves, saw 13 cars on track. Andy Kirby in his Class 4 Peugeot broke away in the lead and in the six lap distance nobody could catch him, making Andy the youngest winner of this coveted trophy.

KING OF DOWN

The other big Easter meeting took place in Northern Ireland. Last year the three day “King of Down” event had to be postponed, but this time it enjoyed perfect conditions and attracted a big turnout, including visitors from Southern Ireland, England and Scotland, to the beautifully prepared Maghaberry track. By the end of the very full weekend the track was so hard and polished that none of the bigger cars could find the grip to challenge Matt Jess in his Class 1 Mini, and Matt came home the winner of the King of Down title.

EASTER ACTION

It was an exceptional Easter weekend - exceptionally late in the year; exceptionally busy, with sixteen days of Autograss racing, and exceptional for the hot, sunny weather that prevailed for most of those events - a contrast to last year, when all but two meetings were rained off, or a couple of years earlier when we were running away from the snow!

Unusually we'd already had six full weekends of racing before arriving at Easter, but the holiday schedule included the usual treats, headed by the three day Hereford event, held this year at a brand new venue on the banks of the River Lugg between Hereford and Leominster. The new track proved a great success, with very few teething problems. Some good racing with 96 entries on Saturday scrubbed off the grass in preparation for Sunday's hectic event, with another full day on Monday.

Another three day meeting, the "King of Down" kicked off the Northern Ireland season. The Scottish season began on Sunday at the new Avonbridge track, near Falkirk.  There were more Sunday meetings at Scarborough, Scunthorpe, Leewood, Nottingham, STAR, Gloucester, Invicta and West Waterford. PAC's scheduled Easter meeting was not run due to the proximity to the BAS round there a few days later.

On Easter Monday, it’s traditional for everyone who’s not at Hereford to converge on YORK for what was always one of the busiest single day meetings of the year. This year’s entry was a little smaller, with 154 signed on, so York responded by giving everyone for heats and a final – good value for those who survived the day.

Despite clashing with Hereford, GLOUCESTER & DISTRICT club had a very successful Easter Sunday meeting on their newly extended track at Elton corner. 135 drivers signed on and the meeting made history as, after a trial run at Hereford on Sunday, it was the first Autograss meeting broadcast live on the internet by Grass FM.

However the biggest Easter event was Hereford’s well established three dayer, held this year on a band new and unusual riverside track, the Lugg View Raceway, with the pits strung out along the river bank. The new track settled down well, with just a couple of natural trouble spots that were largely smoothed out by the end of the weekend, with the Hereford members working well to keep the show going through a very full three days. Saturday saw 96 drivers in action, with the entry peaking at 184 on Sunday. Some cars left after Sunday’s West Midland League qualifier, but were replaced on Monday by others who’d been qualifying at Gloucester.

CAR OF THE WEEK

.. or maybe car of the year? Adam Saint, who attracted so much comment with his giant-killing performances at last year's Nationals, debuted his exciting new Class 3 challenger at Cambridge. The 1958 Austin A35, powered by the Pinto engine from Adam's old Fiesta was built painstakingly to the "spirit of the rules", retaining the original bodyshell intact apart from the door skins. The first time the car turned a wheel, it ran a close second, splitting two of the quickest men in the class, Dave George and Aaron Mackenzie. All credit to "Scad" for demonstrating how an ingenious club racer on a mechanic's wages can take the sport forward and break the myth of an "unaffordable" class.

There have been several strong contenders for "car of the week" from South Wales so far, including several new Class 7s already pictured on this page, but one that stands out is Carl Ray's "new look" Class 10, built by Gary and Carl Ray, looking unlike any other current Class 10 and promising to be a very strong contender. Thanks to Gareth Jones for the pic and results.

QUALIFYING CONTRASTS

A busy weekend - the last "normal weekend" before the back-to-back Bank Holidays saw meetings on Sunday April 17 at Wessex, Concord, Cambridge, Evesham, Leicester, York, Solway, South Wales and North Wales, while Cork ran the year's first two day meeting. The day showcased the different approaches to National qualifying, as North Wales ran a closed to league qualifying meeting; York ran their usual segregated qualifying races, and Cambridge stayed with the open meeting format for the East Anglian League's second qualifier.

Cambridge's meeting took place on a perfectly prepared track, with a good turnout of East Anglian drivers, although the centre of attention, apart from the impressive debut of the A35, was the visiting Class 7 squad of Karl and Abi Mosley and Carl Swift, who provided plenty of sideways action in the heats. They pulled out of the final to avoid affecting the qualifying points, but it was still a spectacular race as Kraig Murley got the better of Vernon Mackenzie and John Deegan.

SUNSHINE EVERYWHERE

With what will virtually be a two week long Bank Holiday weekend looming, maybe we shouldn't comment on the Spring weather, but on 10 April virtually the whole country bathed in warm sunshine, meaning that most of Sunday's meetings benefited from a  relaxed atmosphere and perfect track conditions. Nowhere was this more true than Invicta Kent, the fastest growing club in NASA and maybe already the largest single club. An entry of 115 enjoyed a superb and slickly run day's racing. There was just one non-Invicta driver present, Cambridge's Sam French, who won two Class 1 heats before his luck dramatically ran out in the final.

The Invicta meeting saw quite a few new drivers, and the return of some past favourites, including Class 5 National Champion Mark Weeks, having his first race for 14 years, now in Class 8 (and very competitive indeed!), while Andy Russell returned to Class 2 action with two heat wins.

After cancellations at Cork and West Waterford, it was third time lucky we hope in Ireland as Carlow's reopening meeting on 10 April finally got the Irish season under way, on the improved and extended Knocknatubbrid track.  Other events took place at North Shropshire, Yorkshire Dales, Radford, Pennine, Cwmdu and Spalding.

MORE WEEKEND ACTION:

The dry conditions favoured a flat out, sideways approach from the drivers contesting the East Midland League's qualifier hosted by Pennine club at Darleymoor. Here's a taste of the action from www.absnapshots.co.uk plus this splendid shot of a leaping Tanga from Simon Tickle at www.anyhowracing.co.uk. Photos are also online from Spalding at www.mwa-motorsports.co.uk, Radford at www.grassin.zenfolio.com and from North Shropshire at www.bangersandsmash.co.uk

Our best wishes go to Dave (Norm) Westlake, who was injured in a big rollover at Radford. We're pleased to hear that Rachel Hinton and Andy Preece, whose marshals' post came under attack at Pennine, were soon back on their feet.

HAILSTORM AT SCUNNY

DESERT STORM AT ST NEOTS

This week’s featured meetings received varied fortunes at the hands of the weather. At Scunthorpe, with a 174-strong entry list, the fun was terminated halfway through the finals, when the Juniors disappeared under an onslaught of hailstones.

At St Neots, drivers faced a different sort of challenge as the new track surface needed time to settle in; the warm, sunny, breezy conditions saw the Riverside Farm venue resembling the Sahara Desert at times, despite regular attention with roller and water cart. There were only three major incidents, though, as the smaller than usual entry of 106 laid on some close fought racing. All were agreed that the complete renewal of the track surface (after 24 years’ racing at the venue) will pay dividends as the season progresses.

Ian Robins and Stuart Hurrell both got upside down in their Class 9s, while Kirsty Noble had a spectacular roll in her Class 1. Busiest driver of the day was Mark Empson, who took the Class 9 win minutes after proving that his experimental NASA 1 Micra could run with the quickest Minis in Class 1. Dave George and Kraig Murley were winners in their new cars, while a momentary hiccup in the final cost Chris Pope’s new Randall Class 8 a debut win.

GET WELL SOON JEFFO!

Week three of the season saw the first action of the year  at Yorkshire Dales, Radford and PAC, while Nottingham and STAR both had their second meeting of the year. Unfortunately the Yorkshire Dales meeting resulted in a serious accident in the second Class 8 heat, and Andy Jefferson was hospitalised with a suspected broken neck. Our best wishes to Andy and the Jefferson family.

Nottingham's meeting, while a lot more relaxed than the hectic season opener there, attracted 150 entries and saw some excellent close racing on the usual immaculately prepared Oxton track.

PAC staged the first meeting on their new track, which is due to be the venue for the first BAS round.

Thanks to Gary Jones www.garyphotos.zenfolio.com for the PAC photos and thanks to Gareth Jones for the results.

MORE RESULTS
We're always happy to receive and publish results from events that we haven't been able to cover ourselves. It helps us (especially at this time of year, with drivers changing clubs and numbers) if results could include drivers' names where possible. If you only have the car numbers we're still interested, but there might be a short delay in publication while we look up (or guess!) the names to go with any unfamiliar numbers.

CLASSICS & ROLLS AT EVESHAM

The second weekend of the Autograss season saw well supported meetings in the spring sunshine at Evesham, Severn Valley, Pennine, York and South Somerset.

Evesham's meeting brought out 164 entries on a very slightly extended version of the familiar Dodwell track, with more track alterations due before the next meeting. The day was punctuated by several relatively minor rollovers, topped by a much more spectacular one for Bredon Hill Class 2 driver Jamie Stevens, whose father Tony had also rolled earlier in the day!

Pennine's meeting also featured a spectacular roll by Paul Dann in Class 5.

The Classic Class 3 movement gained strength at Evesham with the debut of a very competitive Zetec powered Morris Minor, built and raced by young Mike Hill, while his father John updated to a Mk2 Capri. John English's Mk2 Escort enjoyed a moment of glory, driven by Robyn King, who won the Ladies' Modified Saloon final.

FIRST ONE OF THE YEAR .....

We thought we'd missed it, but just found we did have some photos after all of Gemma getting on her head at Nottingham. More on our gallery pages ...

STRONG START TO 2011 SEASON

After all the controversies of the winter, Autograss has never looked as healthy on the opening day of the season as it did at Nottingham on March 13. Opening day also featured meetings at Scarborough and STAR (the fourth planned meeting, at Forest of Dean, was cancelled due to ongoing track improvements), but Nottingham’s was by far the biggest, attracting 245 entries from as far afield as Scotland and Southern Ireland, the total entry being higher by a third compared to the corresponding fixture last year.

A dull and damp start gave way to a fine sunny afternoon, with perfect track conditions, allowing a full programme of two heats and “alphabet finals” to be run. Every class was hotly contested, but highlights included two leading lady racers having their first outings in the men’s classes, Lisa Branston taking a good win in Class 4 and Danielle Barrett giving Bill Shaw a good run for his money in Class 10. Gary Cheetham won Class 5 on his debut with the ex John Deegan/Tony Spencer Xtreme Mini, while Ian Spencer took a convincing Class 8 win over the strongest imaginable field. Despite the big field and close racing, there was only one major incident when Gemma Stephenson became the first this season to get on her roof.

GRASSERS AT COVENTRY

Autograss cars made their first appearance on the shale track at one of the UK's most prestigious Stock Car racing venues, Coventry Stadium on Saturday 26 February. The invited field of fourteen local racers took part in three "demonstration races". The two heats were won by Paul Fackrell's Class 10 and Mick Sumner's Class 3 and these two featured in a thrilling final; Mick fended off the faster Special until the very last corner, when Paul dived down the outside before quickly switching line to the inside and pipping Mick to the line. Others taking part were Pete Haines' Class 3, the Class 5s of Brian Waterhouse and Al Green, the 7s of  Mark Barrett, Darren Anslow, Ian Craske, PJ Bott and Pete Bott Snr; the 8s of James Grasby and Steve Moss and the 9s of Julie Walford and Norman Grasby. This great publicity opportunity for Autograss was set up by Class 7 racer Darren "Stumpy" Anslow and the grassers will be back at Coventry in the summer, with a bigger Saturday night show planned, subject to NASA approval, on a weekend when there are no club meetings scheduled anywhere in the country.

 RACE RETRO

Coventry was the place to be at the end of February; as well as the stadium racing, NASA were strongly represented at the Race Retro show just down the road at Stoneleigh. On display were Mark Empson's budget 2012 Class 1 Micra, Matthew Scourfield's immaculate "traditional" Class 1 Mini and Darren Grasby's radical Fiat 126 Class 7, the sister car to father Graham's class 5 that was seen at the NEC. As usual the stand attracted plenty of interest while the rest of the show featured the usual fascinating array of historic race and rally cars and bikes.

Photos from Race Retro and Coventry Stadium, together with Sunday's meeting at Standlake Arena, can be found on our new photo site.

NEW PHOTO SITE ONLINE

We've now set up our new photo site which we'll use for all our 2011 photo galleries - please follow the link below.

Photos from our first three events of 2011 are currently being uploaded. All our 2010 photos are still on line, while the popular "candid" off track galleries will all appear first on Andrea's own site www.absnapshots.co.uk - where you'll also find a special offer on the "National Champions" calendar that many of you saw at the NEC.

EXPO EXPLOITS

A revised format for the seventh annual Oval Racing Expo, at Arena Essex Raceway, resulted in two very full days of racing action on the tarmac oval, in addition to the static displays and trade and private sales areas in the pits and marquee. The on track action featured eighteen different short oval racing classes in addition to the full range of NASA and SEGTO Autograss/Grasstrack classes.

On Saturday the NASA and SEGTO cars raced together; the afternoon was devoted to practice and heat races for the very full entry of Grassers, then after a short interval the 30 race evening programme commenced, with the grassers’ finals slotted in between the heats for the various Hot Rod and Stock Car categories. The highlight of the weekend for a lot of people was the battle in the RWD Super Saloons final; Garfy Lines’ Class 5 and Gary Dore’s SEGTO Super Saloon swapped the lead as Antony Jackson carved through from the back of the grid in his Class 5. Martin Beaney’s Class 3 Starlet was also in the thick of it and after a spectacular outside pass that reminded spectators of the halcyon days of Hot Rod racing, it was Martin who took the win after fifteen frantic laps. The FWD Super Saloons category went to South Londoner Nicky D’Souza, who jumped between his RWD and FWD Minis all night. A spectacular end to the Specials final saw Sussex Class 8 racer Mark Hall snatch a last corner win from veteran Barry Hathaway, who was only supposed to be shaking down Lynn Thomas’ Aprilia-powered 8. The Production A category saw Fred Carpenter, racing his Mini for the first time since the 2010 Nationals, fend off the Standlake Arena-based Vauxhalls of Daniel Lake and Jack West. Production B honours went to St Neots’ George Tillson-Smith, who similarly held off two rapid SEGTO challengers, Trevor Smith and Bernie Chambers. SEGTO’s Oliver Tilley narrowly beat NASA’s Jake Bartlett in the Juniors, while Luke Hardy was the first Junior special to finish.

On Sunday the NASA and SEGTO drivers, part from the Juniors, raced in their own groups. Fred Carpenter featured in the weekend’s most spectacular moment, flipping his Mini onto the armco barrier – look here to see how he did it! Martin Beaney ended the weekend with another spectacular win in the NASA final. Tom Tilley beat the bigger Prod B cars to win the SEGTO Production category and Laurence Connors took the SEGTO Modified division. Oliver Tilley was again the Junior winner.

SEGTO drivers will now get another opportunity to race on the Arena tarmac, with a full two days of racing planned on July 2/3, while the Expo will take place once again on January 21/22 2012.

NEC ROUND-UP

It proved a very full and busy weekend for the NASA members helping on the show stand, or performing and organising in the Live Arena. The Class 3 and 7 drivers raced again on Friday, and then five times each day on Saturday and Sunday, building up to the Oval Racing Spectacular events on Saturday and Sunday evening which featured three rounds of racing. Most of the twelve drivers enjoyed a turn in front before the final win of the weekend was claimed by Michaela Bevans.

The Juniors had another race on Friday, won by Beth Tomkinson, and then returned for the Saturday evening show. Ash Bryan and Alice Bevans took the two heats, but the girls were headed in the final as Spencer Wanstall took the honours.

Back in the exhibition halls, there were sixteen brand new, and one previously raced, Autograss cars on show and despite the superb presentation of all the new cars, the biggest crowd was drawn by the “as raced” Micra of Mark Empson, the centre of attention as NASA announced a return to the sub-£1,000 race car (Mark’s example actually having been put on track for under £500).

  NEC ACTION UNDER WAY

Autosport International at the NEC is now in full swing. The main focus on day one, Thursday, was in the Live Action Arena where the Class 3s and 7s and the Juniors had three practice runs and one public show, where Kirby Johnston headed the field in the Juniors. Just one or two mishaps; Lee Waldron smacked the wall in his first practice run, but had the car good as new for the afternoon show. Derek Linch missed practice due to a dodgy ignition switch, and then took a front corner off in the show, but he'll be back in action.

If you want to see the most of the grassers, be there at 6 pm on Saturday for the Oval Racing Spectacular - this will be repeated at 4.45 pm on Sunday, but without the Juniors.

We'll look forward to meeting as many of our readers as possible on the NASA stand during the weekend. If you've missed the two "catch-up" issues of Autograss Review, published at Christmas and New Year, you can get these and renew subscriptions at the NASA stand.
